I have so many nieces and nephews that I have cut it way down. I give them each a $25 gift card to TRU for all birthdays and Christmas. They have so much stuff already and my sisters and brothers are so happy that they can put it towards something bigger. For a first birthday, I might give about 50 bucks.

For a big birthday I would say 50-75 is reasonable. We have a lot of nieces and nephews (DD is # 10 and she is not the youngest!) and the entire family spends about 25-30 on each child for christmas and birthday gifts.

Birthday, excluding special like first, 13th,etc $25 and $50 for Christmas.

I usually spend about 100-125 for birthdays and about 100 for Christmas.

I just have my brother's kids-- and I spent a little over $100 on both my niece and nephew's 1st bdays. We got them each 5 shares of Disney stock, which is about $100 plus some Disney plush stuff to make it more of a gift for them to open.

1st birthday gets $150.

Subsequent birthdays get $50 or a toy. Terrible to say, but depends on whether or not I get a chance to go shopping.

1st birthdays i spent about 100 for my niece and nephew.. i have one nephew who is also my god son.. for him i usually spnd 200... after the first birthday i spend 30-50

I never spend more than I can afford, whether it is a gift for a family or a friend. IMHO it's the thought that counts and not the monetary value. Sometimes you can get a great gift on sale - does that mean you should spend more $$ because you got a bargain?? Not in my opinion.

I only have my niece & nephew ( my sisters DC) & there is no limit, whatever they desire for the holidays or birthdays.

Special occasions such as 1st B'Day,Christening,1st Communion ~thats as far as we got so far~ calls for 4 digits. Thats ONLY the special milestones.

As for gifts on sale or smaller gifts..Definetly! Some stupid little 20 dollar doggie bed made my nieces year!
