How much pumped breastmilk do they drink as they get older??

DD is 2 months, I've got quite a freezer supply stashed and keep adding to it. I get over 40 ounces of milk pumped each day, so at this point there's a lot left over each day. Basically, I freeze the entire milk supply I pump every 3 days.

Just wondering how long I'll be able to keep up with her with just breastmilk if I am getting about 40 ounces of milk pumped per day (I get more usually, maybe closer to 50 ounces, but I'll say 40 ounces to underestimate).

Thanks!

Anyone BTDT, who has given a 6 month old or even close to a year-old child pumped BM, how much are/were they drinking per day?

WOW 40 ounces a DAY? Is this in lieu of breastfeeding or in addition to breastfeeding?

Great job!!!
Both my boys never took more than a 6oz bottle.

Colin is now 10 months - on work days, he nurses twice (morning and before bed) and gets 3 - 6 oz bottles.

Ryan must have been a monster, he took FOUR 6 oz bottles in addition to 2 nursing sessions until I weaned him at 14 months.

Once they started solids, I was lucky to get 20-25 ounces into them a day.

You sound like me- I had a huge freezer stash. Madelyn got nothing but frozen pumped milk her last month before we started her on regular soymilk.

I was pumping about 32 oz per day (in addition to 2 BF sessions) when DS was 4.5 months. I barely had enough to store at that time. Maybe 1 bottle worth top.

PUMP and Freeze now! Especially if she is like DS was.

No, no BF anymore, just pumping exclusively now.

Impressive! DD took no more than 4 6-oz bottles of BM a day and now at 11 1/2 months takes in 18-20 oz of BM in her sippy cups and cereal.

Re: How much pumped breastmilk do they drink as they get older??

Thanks everyone! When I BF DD#1 I barely had any stash, so at about 4 months she was getting I'd say 50%BM/50%formula. I am exclusively pumping now with #2, so I am very happy with my freezer supply and want to give baby breastmilk as long as humanly possible. I really think I'll continue getting 40 ounces a day when I return to work b/c I'm only pumping every 6 hours now anyway.

Thanks ladies!!

That's definitely what I was thinking, once they start eating more food their milk decreases I know so I hope I have a good supply going here!

Right, but just so you can factor correctly - as they got older, I got less pumping when they started solids.

At one point with Ryan I was pumping 40+ oz in addition to 2-3 nursing sessions a day. As time went on, that def. decreased.

Now, with Colin 10 months - I'm lucky to pump about 12oz a day - if that.

I had a stash of about 650oz with each child.

I only have about 250 oz left for Colin but it should be enough to get us to his first birthday or longer when I started soymilk and then I can continue the morning and night time nursing sessions.

DD is mostly breastfed...but when I do give her bottles she usually drinks 6 ounces. She has been drinking 6 ounces since she was 4 months...she is now 8.5.

I have a ridiculous freezer stash too....my freezer is insane. Keep up the good work.

DS never drank more than 6-6.5 oz at a time. Around 6 months, he got 3 bottles per day and I nursed him at least 1-2 times. By 7 months, he was nursing/taking bottles 4 times per day.

Thank you for this info! I forgot that I have heard this before...why is it that your body produces less milk even if you're pumping exactly the same time (i.e. if I continue pumping for 20 minutes every 6 hours)? Is it b/c your body knows baby is getting older and therefore supply can lower?? There's nothing you can do to keep the supply up to normal at that point?

And bravo to you, that's amazing work mama!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Freeze as much as you can now. As they get older, it is harder to have extra to freeze. I pump exclusively and froze a ton the first three months. Then I started reducing my pumping sessions and now I barely freeze anything (maybe 5 ounces a week). However, I still have 175 ounces in my freezer and I just started using it because it is about to go bad. I am so glad that I froze so much earlier on so that I can keep up with the demand now that she drinks more.

Re: How much pumped breastmilk do they drink as they get older??

My DS is 4 months and drinks 3- 5oz. bottles at daycare and nurses from me 3 x.s I'm guessing he gets @27-30 oz. a day. It'll be less once he starts solids, so 40oz. a day sounds amazing! I usually only get an extra 3-5 oz. a day from pumping.

Re: How much pumped breastmilk do they drink as they get older??

I BF both my DCs for the whole 1st year of their lives.

One thing I learned is that BM quantities work differently than formula..the content changes to meet the needs of your child!

So the amount plateaus after a while....both my children has a similar schedule:

they started at 2 oz and went up about a half oz each month until they plateaued at about 5.5 oz They both never had any more than that!
