How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

As the New Year approaches, I usually like to take stock of what has been saved or not and put things in perspective for the new year in order to make new priorities, goals etc....
I was talking with my DH last night about this and I was wondering about this and thought I'd post this here and see what the consensus is in terms of saving $$$$$ or not saving any.......
I'd put a poll in case you were not comfortable in posting the amounts you have saved...or if it's the opposite as well.....
Thanks for sharing.....Chat Icon

ETA>>> I should have said saving $$$ only without including 401K Plans or any investment plans from work.....Chat Icon

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

This past year my DH finished paying off his car, and as soon as he did we decided to live on his salary, and save mine. We're actually doing fine--his can cover our mortgage, gas, electric, car insurance, health insurance, but I use mine to pay my student loans. So we're in the $20,000+ category for now. My parents lived like this when they first married, and it enabled them to buy a second home when the first didn't sell right away, and it allowed my mom to stay home with me and my brother when we were little, so that's my goal. If we save this much for 3-4 years before we have kids, I would feel OK moneywise about everything. This doesn't include any of our IRA or retirement funds.

DH just started a new job yesterday so we will now be able to save a lot more than we did now that he is making more money and we are going to saving on car repairs and gas since his new job is in the city and not in LI like hsi old one was.

We are trying to make our goal in 2006 to have at least $10k in savings. Right now it's not near that. Chat Icon

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

We make good money but somehow never have any money saved, other than we put $100 a month into our savings account for Christmas gifts (although this year we had to use most of that money to pay off some bills).
We do put the max amount towards our 401k though, so we have a good chunk of money invested in that.

We both save in a qualified plans so that is over $20k per year. We also save in ESOP and that is about another $10k per year. I also save our tax return which varies but is about $10k.

We save over $35k per year. That does not include 401k's and such.

We try to save $1,000 a month, not including 401Ks and other investment accts. However, the past few months have been hard since we needed a new roof and washing machine and renovated the house. Now our tenants are moving and we need to renovate their apartment because it is so old. So saving will be minimal until we get new tenants.

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

I thought that you meant is save as in cash only so I guess I have change my response. I have a 401K and DH has an IRA. Now at DH's new job he will be investing in a 401K plan too.

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

We were able to save about $5k this year but more then half of that was in wedding gifts and we are moving out in January (living with my FIL right now) and between that and having to pay childcare when I go back to work next week, it will probably be gone within months which really scares me. I should add that we have a nice chunk saved from wedding gifts but we are not able to save anything additionally from our paychecks.

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

I am amazed how much people can save!! Maybe because we have 2 kids in daycare and after-care, we can't save anything from Aug-Dec. From Jan-July we can only save $100/month. We also have 401K's though so at least we have something-lol!

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

ZERO

We pay our bills, put 15% each in our 403(b), and that's it. We have 5k in a savings account, but that's for emergencies and we're not actively adding to it.

We bought a house and splurged on a trip to Ireland this year, so we have saved very little. But we both have a good chunk in our retirement savings. We still have a good amount left, but it's not enough that we feel secure at the moment.

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

When we were renting, we were able to save almost $1,000/month.

Now that we have a house, mortgage, commuting costs, home improvements, double the costs of all utility and other bills (compared to renting), etc., even with both our salaries being greater, we are in the hole almost $1,000/month!

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

I think for most people that depends on whether they own a house or not. Up until now, DH and I have been able to save a ton of money, but now that we bought a house we'll hardly be saving anything, most of our money will go to mortgage payments, furniture and home improvements.
