Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

Only since the beginning of this year have we started to REALLY save....we direct deposit all of DH check into a savings acct. The only thing paid from that is $200 for his car payment. We are saving 1/2 as much in the last few months because he went part time in Sept. for school (which is full time).
So this year we will be in the $15,000 range. I hope to start adding from my paycheck each month this January to that acct. to keep on that track for 2006.

I hate to be rude but is everyone who saves alot each year making over $100,000 total? I just ask because we are in the $50,000-$75,000 range and can barely save. I know we don't make much but it seems we never get ahead like so many others are doing.

Do you mean per person?

We are able to save a good chunk every year. BUT, we don't own a house/condo/coop, have a car or children. If we had any one of those things, we would not be able to save at ALL. That is terrifying.

Well we always add to our 401k and 403b, but I don't even think of it during the year. We are able to save about 1/2 of my paycheck each time I get paid. So, it adds up...but then the summer comes when I don't get paid and the savings depletes big time to help pay the summer bills. Plus, DH and I travel a lot. We are more focused on saving more and traveling less for the new year. We really want to buy a house. Luckily we have a condo to sell, this will help!

We don't make over $100,000. I am a SAHM and DH makes pretty close to that. DH is adamant about saving if were weren't able to put away $1,000 a month then he wanted me to go back to work. We don't lead extragavant lifestyles. We have 2001 car with no payments. We go out to dinner occasionally, maybe once a month. We also have no other debt other than our mortgage. DH bought his house in 96 before the boom and it is a legal 2 family house, so we have rental income as well.

Honestly, we make good money (over 100k+), we don't own a house/condo/co-op and don't have any kids. We do have car payments. We bank my entire salary and more because of the above. I don't have illusions that I will be able to do that once I buy and have children Chat Icon

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

We saved about 30K this year because we've been saving for a house and have been living on his salary and banking mine for the most part. We're in the process of purchasing an apartment, but we have no debt, no cars, no kids...We should be able to save a similar amount once we move because our mortgage will be just a little more than we're paying in rent right now.

Our combined income is over $100k, but we also live pretty frugally. We both drive cars that are over 10 years old and know exactly what we spend on. And as I said before, no house or kids, so that enables us to put away a lot. I am sure that will change when we buy a house Chat Icon

Re: How much You and Your DH Saved in a year?

we just bought a house in a new state b/c DHs job is moving here in 2 weeks. i am looking for a job - i just passed the bar exam so hopefully i will find something soon. as for debt we have the mortgage and my law school debt but that is it.
as for savings, those were put towards the downpayment - we put down more than 20% of the purchase price. Hopefully we will build up our savings soon.

For us, we made a budget, looked at the required expenses, our income, and said what can we live without. Those things were cut out. So for now, no new clothing except necessities - socks, undershirts, etc. We have one car, I drive DH to the train and pick him up. I use coupons and try to purchase things on sale.
