How often do you feel a house should be painted?

The interior, I mean. We just moved into our house last fall. The house was just painted 4 years ago, we are happy with the colors, and it still looks good. DH wants to repaint right away, and I feel we can wait a few years. To me, 4 years doesnt seem like a long time between paintings, but what do I know? Any thoughts?

Either when you need/want a new color, or if it looks ragged. Lots of scratches, dings, marks, scrapes, etc. We had white walls on our house, and are only repainting after 13+ years, mainly because we want to change the colors. Some rooms we did sooner, again, to change the colors. Some spots had damage, so we repainted.

we are approaching the 5 year mark in our house & I'm ready to repaint our main living areas. I still like my colors but the walls are beat up. Our rooms that we use less are fine.

If the walls are in good shape and you like the colors, I say leave it as long as you can before you re-paint it.

I think it depends on the kind of paint that was used (some wear better) and how many people are in the house. Obviously a house with 2 adults will last longer than a larger family with lots of little people running around.

If the paint looks fine and your ok with the colors WHYYYYY fix something thats not broken, painting is $$ and a huge PIA, i say leave it be :) There are always plenty of other things that need to be done :)Chat Icon

We are going on 6 years and we are ready to repaint mostly for color reasons.

The walls are in fairly good shape.

I agree 1000%. Unfortunately my DH thinks some of the walls need repair and wants to paint, but I can live with it for a few more years.

my mom was a little nutty about it when I was growing up. Each room was painted every 2-3 years. She says now she lets it go to 5 years.

We are on 4 for some rooms and there is no desire to paint right now.

i would then. if the walls need repair, no matter how small, it would annoy me.
little dings and scratches don't bother me as much.

i would do it before you have kids (if you don't have any yet) b/c that's a huger PITA than anything!!

Good luck with DH!!

We moved into our our almost 3 years ago (September will be 3 years) It was new construction so we had to repaint some rooms due to the house settling (nails etc.) but I feel like we are ready to repaint again or at least the rooms that were not repainted.

I repaint every 5 years or so. But I woud never move into a new house without painting first, I don't care if the old owners just painted it last week. I need to pick my own colors and put my stamp on the place. New paint=fresh start.

Call us for a free estimate! Painting is the least expensive thing that you can do to your home to not only freshen it up but make it look beautiful! There's nothing like a professionally prepped and painted home that's done RIGHT. We've been in business for over 50 years and are a father and son owner operator. We are also listed in the LI Families contractors site under "painting contractors". Lic & Ins. in Nassau/Suffolk (sorry, no Queens or Brklyn). Contact us on the web www.madiaspainting.com or call 516.485.6568.

When it starts to look bad, or if I want to redo a color

The only room we painted right away was our bedroom, the rest had just been painted and looked nice...
