How often do you go into a store and come out feeling GOOD about yourself after a trip to the fitting room?

I can tell you for me, it doesn't happen very often AT ALL. clothes just aren't made for my shape as much these days, and it's very depressing sometimes trying to find things that fit AND flatter (regardless of my size)

so yesterday I went to Loehmanns looking for an evening gown.

I found 7 suitable options and ventured into the well lit and OPEN fitting room.

wouldn't you know...6 of them looked fantastic on me. I couldn't believe it. I wanted to buy them all. I finally found the cut and shape that accentuates all the good about my body and covers most (if not all of) the bad.

I was so sad to leave there with just one dress.. and may go back for one or two of the others I tried.

but I felt good about myself for the rest of the day, which almost NEVER happens after a shopping trip.

I am not sure about you girls...but it gave me a much needed boost as I have been feeling bad about the pounds I gained voer the winter.

anyone else have an experience they'd like to share?

I know what you mean. I even get pi**ed every time I shop at Nordstrom b/c the dressing room lighting is TERRIBLE. It's so bad that it HAS to effect their sales.....nobody could feel confident in that light.

I think I'm also used to seeing myself in one of several mirrors in my own home. I have almost tricked myself into believing I look a certain way and then when I go into the dressing room it's like REALITY hits.

I think it's awesome that you had such a great shopping experience! It's not often that it happens for me and when it does it IS exhilarating!!

After having a baby - I hardly ever feel good coming out of the dressing room. Things just change. I still have weight to lose and I don't think I will ever fit back into my Size 3/4s again Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: the WORST is when you stand naked in those three way mirrors - with the torturous lighting - that you just want to run out of there crying. You suck it all in - and it just doesn't help one bit! Chat Icon

I hope you have a better experience today. Chat Icon

I'll tell you what helped me. I found an actress that had a similar body type (I chose Scarlett Johannson-she's smaller than I am but shaped similarly) and google imaged her. I looked through all of her "glammed" up pics to see the dress shapes that she wore and looked for those.

lo and behold, they were my best fits. perhaps this will work for you!

That is a really good idea.

Can you think of any actresses who have little arms and legs - but still - a little bump in the belly area!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had a similar expericne with Jeans a few months ago.
I hate buying pants. I'm sort legged, big butted, and borderline plus sized.

I had only purchased 2 pairs of jeans in the last 4 or 5 years, and they were falling apart, & I didn't love them, so I went shoppinf & came home with 3 pairs that all fit me & are different washes/lengths. IN ONE DAY!

I love them. I almost returned the 3rd, b/c I was only looking for 2, but 2 of them were only aroud $30, and the other I had store credit for at Macy's, so I had to keep them all! I fear I'll never find jeans again!

Halle Berry. Perfect example. She's still wearing some loose fitting clothing, but mostly in the belly area. She's showing off her cleavage and her legs, but hiding her belly still. I think she looks fantastic post-baby.

For me, it's Kristin Davis. I am shaped like her - and I love her feminine style!

that's a good one.

what about Nicole Richie also. she, even heavy, had thin arms and legs. (obviously not anorexia Nicole LOL)

Reese Witherspoon is another...

Re: How often do you go into a store and come out feeling GOOD about yourself after a trip to the fitting room?

lately...every single time. After losing over 60 lbs, I feel GREAT! Sure, there are still things I am working on, but I'm enjoying the body that I have now, while I'm working on them. I went from a size 20 to now a size 8. I think I deserve to feel good!

Also, it does help to know WHAT style to try on. I used to get depressed. But, I have to tell you, once I learned what I can and cannot wear...even at a size 20, I would walk out of the dressing room happy. I didn't have unrealistic expectations as far as the style of the clothes. So, I wouldn't even look at the styles that I knew wouldn't suit me.

Don't say that!! I NEVER thought my old clothes would fit me. And now, they don't...they are too big! Your body does change, but you can definately get back to feeling good about yourself!

yep. I can relate. I don't even go to the dressing room anymore. I bring everything home. Do a show for DH and he tells me what he likes, dislikes, fits or not. Then I return what I don't keep.

Re: How often do you go into a store and come out feeling GOOD about yourself after a trip to the fitting room?

To answer the original question - more often than not, I'm not happy with what I see in the dressing rooms. I often walk out way more depressed than when I went in.

Although, I did have a good experience bathing suit shopping this year (bathing suits of all things!).

I had just come back from vacation and was still pretty tan. I was shopping with DH, and we were going out to eat after, so I was dressed nice, hair done, makeup on, wearing jewelry. I felt good about myself going into the dressing room, so I think that helped (that and the tan Chat Icon ). Granted, I wasn't 100% pleased with my body, but I wasn't as unhappy as I usually am when I have to bare so much skin in the dressing room.

So glad you had a good experience Chat Icon

I usually feel great in the dressing room unless its bathing suit shopping, that is why I order online now and try them on at home! Also, there are a few styles I could never ever ever wear like skinny jeans or those babydoll tops - so I avoid those

Re: How often do you go into a store and come out feeling GOOD about yourself after a trip to the fitting room?

as long as i fit in my regualr size (to show im not gaining weight) i usually feel just fine.

its when my regualr size is tight on me- that is when i feel sad/upset
and that happens more lately.....

i do not like bathing suit shopping. even though im thinner tham i was a few years back, im not nearly how this i was 2 years ago, and i still see al lthe negatives in my figure and my eye goes right to them.

thats just human nature i guess.

glad you had a great experience!!!

that pretty much sums it up for me

the best feeling for me to be when you order your size and the size up from a website....

and have to send both back and get an even smaller size

that happened to me on Monday- I was Chat Icon

Lately I think everything looks better on the hanger unfortunately. The "trendier" clothes look so cute but when I try them on, they're just not me. And everything else is just, blah. Chat Icon So that's why I stick to a black top and jeans. Chat Icon

Re: How often do you go into a store and come out feeling GOOD about yourself after a trip to the fitting room?

I have always had good experiences in Fox's and other stores - Gap, Old Navy, etc - but I went to abercrombie the other day, and when I saw the little pieces of material passing for clothing it made me want to cry... I had to remind myself that I'm not 14, 1st of all, and that those tiny jeans are there in abundance because all the normal sizes are the ones that get purchased 1st!!! Chat Icon

Re: How often do you go into a store and come out feeling GOOD about yourself after a trip to the fitting room?

Glad you had a great experience. Its always a hit or miss with me. I can find tons of stuff that look great on me one day & the next I can walk around the mall & not find a single thing that at all. Those are the days I walk out in total disgust. Chat Icon It takes me multiple shopping trips to purchase once single outfit sometimes. Its very rare that I can walk out of a mall with a top/bottom/shoes & accessories to match.

I stopped shopping as much as I used to because Im pregnant now, but I'll tell you- I miss those days that I can walk into a place like Forever 21 and fit into just about ANYTHING!!
