The twins were very early talkers..much to my amazement as well as their pediatricians...at 6 months they had 5 words...mama, dada, hi, hat, & light. They continue, to this day, to have exceptional vocabularies...I just wish they were exceptional students..unfortunitely they only make the honor roll in socializing!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ariel said her first word at 10 months..light.

Re: how old was your dc when they said their 1st word?

I guess her first word was "Hunter" which is the IL's dog (could it have been Dada or Mama?? nooo Chat Icon Chat Icon )

That was around 9 months I think but only recently (14 months) has she really come out with anything "clear"

Ben is 7 mos and babbles a LOT! Sometimes we hear mama, baba, dada, and goo but we know it's just our wishful thinking he actually means to say it. Chat Icon

But the mama, dada, gaga , goo etc are not words. They arent used correctly, its just babble.

a 6, 7, 8 month old cannot repeat a word and understand what it means.

I think you mean a real word and correctly right?

ya. i was getting a bit worried b/c ds (8 1/2 months) only babbles. yes he does occasionally babble mama, dada, etc. but it doesn't have any meaning to him. i just saw some posts lately where younger babies have been using words and was wondering what was norm for the 1st real word.

Re: how old was your dc when they said their 1st word?

Speech is one of those things where there is a broad spectrum of what the norm is....

Some children speak earlier than others and it does not mean that these children are any more inteligent that babies that dont utter a "real" word until 18 months.

My girls were early talkers. They knew what they were saying as did we. (If my ex would release the video I would love to post them talking at this age but he wont give it to me Chat Icon ) They are, at 9 years old, average students..they receive AIS services for reading and are monitored in math. They continue to have huge vocabularies and are very well spoken etc...but they are just average kids.

My eldest daughter uttered her first word at 10 months. Her vocabulary continued to grow normally through the first couple of years with no speech delay. It wasnt until language became more complex that we saw an issue with her language skills. She is at 14 a remarkable girl...but she still struggles with her language skills.

Just remember that while some children are focusing on there debating skills others are working on there football careers!!!
