how/what do you feed your cat? (my cat needs to LOOSE WEIGHT!)
ok ladies - my fatty fat cat really needs to loose weight!!! i was wondering if anyone has ever shed pounds off their cat and how they did it
also - we have been feeding him ONLY dry food since forever and i'm hearing that may be a reason for him being fat.... any suggestions?
he just went to the vet and weighs 17 pounds the vet said she would like to see him at at least 12 pounds!!
any advice would be GREAT!
TIA

Re: how/what do you feed your cat? (my cat needs to LOOSE WEIGHT!)
My vet recommended Science Diet K/D, one has a kidney issue and it is low calorie enough that the other one can also eat it. They each get 1/8th of a cup in the morning & evening, and we alternate with the k/d wet food.
My chubby guy went from 17 to about 12. Good luck!

Re: how/what do you feed your cat? (my cat needs to LOOSE WEIGHT!)
My Figaro tipped the scales at one point at 25 pounds.
I put him on a weight management dry food. 1/4 cup 2x a day. Treats only on very special occassions. The weight comes off very, very slowly. Only about 1/2 a pound every 6 months but the vet said that is normal for an animal their size.
He wasn't very happy, to say the least, but he got used to it and it worked.
Good luck!

I don't think so, we buy it from the vet.
Does your current food come in a low calorie version?
The vet mentioned that the recommended amounts of food on the packaging are for very active animals- and mine are couch potatoes.

Did your vet do a blood test to see if your cat is hypothyroid?

Re: how/what do you feed your cat? (my cat needs to LOOSE WEIGHT!)
Can you try just limiting the amount of dry food you give your cat?
Our cat was a few pounds overweight so we gave him less dry food, and just one can of fancy feast a day (instead of two).
When we get home we also play with him a lot - have him chase things.
He is perfect now and does not miss the food. Our vet says cats are grazers and will adapt to the amount of food you give them.

What dry food are you using?
We were using Iams Natural and switched to The Goodlife Recipe. Our cat (1) loves the taste more and (2) looks a lot healthier.
I know there is also dry food made for weight control, but I didn't use that our on cat.
Has your vet recommended anything?

see - its such a weird situation... we've only had him since august... we started out just fostering him for my friend who needed someone to take in her cat while she looked for an apartment... and now 8 months later, she asked us to keep him
so when we first took him in, i just used the food she gave me and have been using that ever since... its purina indoor formula.... but since hes over 7 years old, i've heard that i should be feeding him "senior" food
our vet suggested that we do the Rx weight loss food... but im trying to see what other people have done first
