How would you explain the difference between differentiation and modification?
Trying to get some perspectives?
What about accommodations?

Re: How would you explain the difference between differentiation and modification?
Differentiation provides the students with exactly what they need....for example in my Read 180 program I can see some students have difficulty with comprehension, others with sequencing events. I can offer them differentiated extension activities based on individual need after reading each piece of literature.
Modification (I think) is just modifying a task so that a student can successfully complete it. When I was first teaching I taught inclusion...I used to modify all the tasks so the special education students could complete the tasks in the regular classroom. It was awful because the kids were in fifth grade and reading n a 2nd grade level....they really needed a self contained environment to be successful but that's another story. I quit that job and got another teaching self contained.

Modification is when you take a normal activity (with differentiation) and modify it to fit a student's IEP directives. For example, I have a student with work mods that include fewer questions per page, labeled maps and highlighted or underlined key words. That's a work mod. The lesson is differentiated however, and includes literacy, auditory, visual and analytic components.

Re: How would you explain the difference between differentiation and modification?
I kind of see it as: Differentiation is the APPROACH to reach all students - how you approach lesson planning to fit everyone's needs. Example: I differentiate by using hands on activities, small group activities, think-pair-share, etc.
Modification is the ACTION that you use for each individual student for their IEP's, etc. Example: To fit Joe's need, I might have to modify my approach for him - coming over and repeating directions orally to him. Or giving Amanda a worksheet that has a larger font. Or sitting Manuel up front for his visual needs.

Agree with this!! I think that differentiating instruction is an attempt to adhere to every child's individual needs to the best of your ability. Modifications are usually specified by IEP's or noticed from in-class assessments like testing accommodations or 5-6 problems for homework when the rest of the class has an entire page.
