HR People, I have a Question....
So a few people from my dept. were let go last week. One of my co-workers called me up that night very angry. She was telling me that I should have done something, that she feels like she cant trust me, and that if I get promoted anytime soon people will be angry, etc etc. I had NOTHING to do with the people getting let go...so this was extremely unfair.
She eventually apologized but I was still very upset about it. So I went in to my boss, who is since the others were let go is now her boss too, and talked to her about the converstation. I really didnt realize what I was doing, I am close with my boss and felt like talking about it. I told her i was telling her this in confidence and that I handled it.
Anyway the next day she tells me she is filing the information i told her and it may come up in the future to be held against this girl. This girl was a friend of mine too, this was never my intention...
Does my boss have the right to use info. about something that happened outside of work against an employee of hers????

Yes she does. It may have happened outside of work, but you complained to your boss. You've made her liable and the company liable if they don't document it and take some action if your co-worker becomes spiteful, etc later on.
