HSG tomorrow...nervous

I have my HSG tomorrow at 12:30. DH and I took our antibiotics this morning. What's the deal with the antibiotics and why exactly do we BOTH have to take them?! The Dr.'s office just said because bacteria can be spread, but I never had to do that before with any other test.

I am really nervous...Chat Icon

Good luck with it! Most of the girls here didn't feel any pain afterwards.....I did, but Advil helped alot! (it was just like regular cramps). I'm sure you'll be fine!

I had to take antibiotics, too (but not DH, though, but it can't hurt to be cautious, right? Chat Icon )

Re: HSG tomorrow...nervous

I can't completely grasp why DH had to take the antibiotics also? Or even why I had to?!

My aunts are supposed to go with me tomorrow, DH has to work. I was going to go by myself, do you think that would be possible as far as driving afterwards? My aunts drive me nuts, I love them, but they will make me nervous.

I drove myself. You will be fine. They don't put you out or anything. You can take yourself.

you take the antibiotics to prevent infection of the pelvic area since you are "flushing" out the tubes so so to speak.

You can definitely drive yourself home if you want and one more bit of advice - wear old panties and pants. I ended up staining my clothes from the iodine

Good luck!

Mine wasn't bad at all. I was uncomfortable, but nothing terrible. I had to take the antibiotics too, but not DH.

I did not have to take antibiotics before the HSG, but we both had to take them before my water sono.

My HSG was bery uncomfortable, but not unbearable. Take some Advil or Motrin beforehand.

Good luck!

I agree with taking a motrin/advil about 1/2 hr before the procedure. I had very slight cramping afterwards and went back to work.

My dr. never said anything about taking an anitbiotic.

Not sure why your DH was given an antibiotic but I had to take it before my HSG to prevent any possible infections. The test is very quick and you should only have a little cramping afterwards. Take a few advil before and you should be fine.

DH and I both had to take antibiotics before the HSG too, make sure you take advil before the test, I didn't have any pain after the test, just during. Good Luck!!

DURING!!?? OMG I am so nervous. Just knowign what they are doing adds to my fear. I am squeamish. I keep reasing the paper where it says they stick something thru my cervix and I just cringe.

Re: HSG tomorrow...nervous

I didn't have to take antibiotics, nor did DH, but the procedure was really quick and painless, at least for me. Honestly I didnt feel a thing - it was just like getting a pap.

Some minor cramps afterwards, but nothing worse than AF cramping. Chat Icon

Re: HSG tomorrow...nervous

The antibiotics for you and DH are to prevent any bacteria from spreading back and forth.
There isn't a whole lot of pain involved, more cramping than anything. The advil will definitely help (I forgot to take it and was fine).
I went from work, had the HSG and went back to work so you can certainly drive yourself if necessary.
I wore a maxi pad after and didn't have any problems

And lastly, don't worry about them going through your cervix too much - there will be alot of that if you do IUI's and/or IVF.Chat Icon
