Re: Hurricane Matthew
Daytona and treasure coast are going to get slammed by the storm surge. Think Sandy but for them. It will be high tide at around 1am and that is exactly when the eye is supposed to hit that area.

So incredibly sad to hear this. It's horrible that in the wake and aftermath of natural disasters you can see both the best and worst of humanity.

This exactly! It's bad enough not knowing the damage that you'll find when you get back. But if everything turns out ok, you home is vandalized? Please people have some respect

Re: Hurricane Matthew
just spoke to a bunch of coworkers on the palm coast & boca area, said they were downgraded to tropical storm bc the storm stayed off-shore so they are far less scared right now. They all still have power at this moment.

My mom'a in Rockledge (near Melbourne) and she said a lot of wind but no flooding and houses are ok. Hopefully it blows over her area soon and the storm heads toward the water for Daytona!

This is because Matthew was supposed to make landfall somewhere around the Tequesta/Port St. Lucie area and I think it landed further up closer to Melbourne.

Breaking: Brevard County reporting People who refused to evacuate are now calling for help as Hurricane Matthew's western eyewall brushes past Cape Canaveral. Families reporting roofs flying off homes in Merritt Island as winds top 100mph. As the Governor warned yesterday, no one is coming to rescue you. He will not put first responders in harm's way.

I'll never understand why people do this. It's just a very, very foolish and selfish decision. I assume they made shelters available to people who possibly had nowhere to go? Schools, stadiums, etc?

Yes. There are shelters available. A young friend of mine left her place last night and went to a shelter

While I understand people being worried about their homes being vandalized if they evacuate....wouldn't any damage/stolen items be covered by insurance? Obviously it's a hassle to do a claim, but with a storm like this it's most likely houses in the mandatory evacuation areas would have damage anyway and already have to submit a claim. Also I would be nervous about confronting someone who is looting....the police wouldn't be able to get thee to help you if someone breaks into your home and you're there.

This is EXACTLY why when they say evacuate, you evacuate! People are just plain dumb, there is a REAL reason why they tell you to get the hell out. It's for your own safety, why take chances? Evacuating might be annoying, I had to do it when I lived in FL, but but you NEED to do it to stay safe.
ETA - I actually lived in Brevard County!!

My mom is one of those - refuses to leave. I don't know if she's worried about looting, but she's had to take care of water that started getting into the house (in addition to dumping water out of her pool so it doesn't flood more toward the house). I don't know how insurance works there since they're obviously in a hurricane zone (not sure if it's the same as flood insurance).
But yeah, I'm always annoyed with her that she would rather stay at the house (and possibly expect someone to risk their lives to save hers) than to go somewhere safe.

Exactly!!!! They are essentially saying the house is more important than their life... SMH! Why don't people get that it's better to be safe than sorry!!!!!!!!!

Those people will be the first people to bad mouth everyone because they weren't helped. Mandatory evacuation means you get the duck out. They shouldn't be helped it's their choice and it's their fault if something happens to them.

We made it ok!!! We are on treasure coast about 10 mi inland. It was nerve wracking with the very high winds, but we fared ok. We are so thankful for the sudden move east around 1 am. We skirted the eye by about 30 Miles. There's trees down and debris but it's fine. By the coast by me has significant damage, but again, it turned out much better than we feared.

Some people don't have insurance. Some have high deductibles (I keep a very high deductible to keep my premium down). Now if I was told to evacuate I would, but some people don't have the financial means. A lot of people in the less wealthy areas are renters so the likelihood of them having insurance is minimal.
