Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

My son has had moments of misery lately ... and when I put my finger in his mouth, he seems sooooo relieved and bites down hard on the sides of his gums. I don't feel any teeth yet, but I can only imagine he's teething.

My doctor believes "teething" pain is a myth and that it doesn't hurt babies when teeth come in. I tend to disagree.

What do you think?

Have you tried and do you trust Hyland's Teething Tablets? One Amazon user review says the FDA says not to use them. Why? And I saw that they were pulled from the shelves for a bit... again, why? But the other ones are all rave reviews... I'm torn.

they contain (or used to contain, not sure) belladonna which comes from a plant that's toxic.

From what I read, Hylands don't really contain anything. They contain water that was mixed with water that was mixed with water that was mixed with water... etc.... that once contained Belladonna, a plant with numbing properties. But there's none of that plant in the Hylands. Hylands is "homeopathic" - homeopathy is the belief that water has a "memory" of what was once in it. Hylands is supposed to be safe to give to newborns, because there's nothing medicinal in it (only the "memory" of something that was once medicinal). Does it work then? A lot of moms say yes, a lot say no. IMO, it's probably just the taste that distracts the babies from crying and allows them to be soothed by you.

And YES, teething hurts. OMG, don't you remember when your molars came in, in 5th grade or so? Or wisdom teeth? Ouch. I've NEVER heard that teething is a myth. So weird.

OMG I loved Hyland's teething tablets. Best thing in the whole wide world. As soon as I heard the nonsense of them taking them off the shelves, I stocked piled.

Yes they contain belladonna but not enough to be toxic if you take it the right way. You pop a whole bottle in your mouth at once and you might have an issue.

My hubby and I both used it ourselves for tooth pain at least once.

Re: Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

Our ped and pediatric dentist agree that teething is painful. How can it not be?

Hylands didn't do much for our first dd. only think that helped was Tylenol.

Yes, teething HURTS!! My DS never complains unless he is teething. He is getting his two year molars and has been screaming in pain during sleep for the past few days. He has bags under his eyes from not being able to sleep Chat Icon

My ped said that ADULTS wouldn't be able to handle the pain of teething without some heavy pain-relieving drugs. Chat Icon

Re: Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

I think you need a new ped.

I used Hyland's a few times with DD. They would instantly make her stop crying and then she'd fall asleep. That was the first couple of times I gave them to her. But then they stopped working. And I found if she was in pain and I gave them to her before putting her to bed, she was guaranteed to be up a few hours later. So I stopped using them because they didn't seem to be helping her anymore. Now I just let her chew on things (Sophie, a lovie, frozen washcloth, bagel, etc) and if she wakes int he middle of the night with bad pain I give her Tylenol.

My ped has said the same thing. We must use the same ped office - Dr. B in lake success? I have used hyland's in the past & seemed to calm DS down. Not sure if it was the tablets themselves or if it was DS being diistracted from the pain by giving him something to suck on.

Re: Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

Sounds like a really idiotic thing for a pediatrician to say. Sorry. We never used Hyland's because I wasn't comfortable using something that wasn't FDA regulated. We used lots of different teethers, frozen wet washcloths, chewing things, and for really bad times, we'd give him a dose of Tylenol before bed.

Re: Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

How can teething pain be a myth? A hard sharp object is pushing it's way through soft gum tissue.
That's like saying the pain of childbirth is a myth.

I remember my wisdom teeth coming in when I was 21 and they hurt like a beyotch as they were cutting through the gums.

As far as Hylands- I don't know. Some people swear by them, for us they did nothing. Nothing at all.
Motrin was the only thing that worked.
And cold teething rings.

Re: Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

When I see my son crying and jamming his whole fist in his mouth for relief or biting me and everything else he can get his hands on (including the wooden arm of my chair) I know he's uncomfortable. I can't imagine that 4 teeth breaking through the skin of your gums at the same time would feel good. He'll forget about it...it's not going to traumatize him...but I'm certain he knows something is up in his mouth.

Re: Hyland's Teething Tablets? Is teething pain a "myth"?

I agree. It sounds really uneducated to say...How could teething not hurt? I think some kids do better with the pain and aren't bothered by it as much. Like when my wisdom teeth came in, it didn't bother me that much. Others were in a lot of pain. But for the most part, teething hurts.

I also didn't give Hylands. My dr didnt recommend it because it has been recalled and not FDA approved. Even though you cant even trust when things are FDA approved. I just give her cold teething rings. I have given Tylenol twice when she had a cold and was also teething. That's about it.

I'm sorry but if my ped told me that teething pain is a myth I would ask them what Cracker Jack box they got their degree from.

What kind of a raging idiot says that teething pain is a myth!??!?! Chat Icon Chat Icon

You can physically SEE how swollen the baby's gums get when they are about to start cutting a tooth and swelling is caused by inflammation and that is painful. Then add that something is CUTTING THROUGH the gum to it? Yeah that ped is a d*ck.

To be perfectly honest, I would not continue using a ped like that at all.

I have used teethers, Humphries, Tylenol and frozen fruit in a sassy feeder to help alleviate my DD's teething pain. But she has five...yes FIVE teeth coming in at the same time and there have been some nights where the pain is so bad nothing works and she screams for hours. I'd love for that doc to tell me that it's a "myth" so I can punch them in the face.

2 weeks ago my DD screamed...not cried...SCREAMED for 3 straight hours. She was pretty much hyperventilating from crying so hard as well as the screams from being in pain. I bawled my eyes out with her because not one single thing helped ease her pain.

The next morning you could see that a tooth had finally pushed through the gums.

I would have LOVED for a doc to tell me that morning that teething pain is a myth. They would be walking down the street with 3 shoes, two on their feet and one up their ass.

Your ped is high. My SIL is a dentist and when she was in school they said that iadults would need morphin to deal with the pain of teething. It hurts!!

I used hylands and it worked really well for DS!

That's funny because our dr said the same thing yesterday about teething not hurting! Maybe they all attended the same seminar lately lol.
