Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
Ugh, same thing happened to DS. I had to leave the room, I thought I was going to pass out. We went to Sunrise blood place in Holbrook, the tech there (tammy) is supposed to be a pro with children, she came as a rec by me ped. Well she got nothing and we have to go back in a month. She also said make sure DS drinks plenty of water before we go back.

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
I always go to Good Sam's outpatient lab. I have only had one bad experience there with one particular person and when I go I request that he doesnt do it.

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
we had a horriable experience at LIJ - they couldn't find DS vein and they claimed he was too chubby. We will try wintrhop next month - hope they are better.

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
ugh, I went through this with KJ when he was only 2 months old
he was running a fever and the nurse tried one arm and could not get the vein, she was wiggling the needle around and I swear, I could not look for fear of passing out
my poor little guy was whimpering (he did not even have it in him to cry - he had already been catherized at the same appointment)
she then looked at me and said "can I try the other arm?"
I said, yes, just do what you have to do and try to make it quick
poor kid

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
I had a VERY similar post exactly a year ago! DD had a very bad experience as well. Make sure you call ahead and make sure there are two staff members available to help - its a 3 person job (including you) Also call ahead and request someone who has a lot of experience drawing blood from an infant.
There are numbing agents that you can use - so I would call your ped and ask about them. You might need a prescription for some of them. We didn't use them, but I read about them in Parents Magazine afterwards and wish I had known.
to you. I will never forget that experience - it was awful...
Good luck..

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
This just happened to me last week. I brought my two little guys by myself. My one son was crying so hard and they were able to get blood. My other little guy they had to poke both arms and never got any blood. the guy said it's harder to find his vein b/c he's chubby. I left in tears full of sweat. I am going to bring him to the good sam lab this week.

Re: I am absolutely traumatized....
I am in the city and there is one quest lab that deals with more children. What I found helpful was to sit in the chair with dd on my lap and I held her arms with my crossed over hers.
I then told the tech after the first bad prick, that she had one more shot and to take it from the under side of the wrist. It was 1-2-3 from that point on.
