I AM LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!

so i just got a call from my sons asst principal.... apparently some kid was verbally arguing with him this morning in the breakfast line at school., well then the boy pushed my son so he pushed him back . Then the boy punched my son in the eye so my son slapped him in the face .....the asst principal said that there are plenty of adults in the cafeteria and that even though my son was not the aggressor he should have gotten an adult instead of fighting back! So i said if there were so many adults why did this happen in the first place!!!!!!!! I then also told her I dont agree with fighting but i always tell my son to defend himself and that he is not going to be anybodys punching bag....which i dont think she liked too much!!!! but am i wrong?????? She then said my son is now walking around school with ice on his eye ...but he is fine!!!! THIS IS CRAZY HE IS 10 FOR GODSAKES!!!

Re: I AM LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd be PI$$ED too. My son's school has a NO TOLERANCE rule. Which means even if you didn't start the fight.........you get punished as well. I agree, my son is no one's punching bag and I've told him he should not be the one to start, but if someone starts with him, he SHOULD defend himself.

My husband has the same attitude "he's a boy and it's gonna happen"! These are our children. We send them to school and pray that they are safe.

Talk to your son. Get the story from him. But I would still talk to the Principal.

Yup!! Something is not right about what the principal is saying- or what the teachers are doing. If there was a room full of teachers it shouldn't have gotten that far.

Re: I AM LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be upset if I were you too, but I can tell you as a former teacher, sometimes these things happen so fast, without warning that you can't see everything going on in the cafeteria at once. I would be glad that it didn't escalate further. If no one saw exactly what happened, I think what the AP did was appropriate.

And, I agree with you - you shoud teach your son to defend himself, regardless of the consequences.

Re: I AM LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand what you are saying as far as they cant have eyes in the back of thier heads but she made it such a point to me that there were alot of adults present .....ok if so then why did it go as far as it did. I guess i am freaked out becuase this is the first time i have ever delt with anything like this....and as the mom of 3 boys im sure it wont be the last! It is crazy though you send your kids to school thinking they will be safe! besides its middle school what the he## will high school be like?? plus her attitude was just real matter of factly which pi$$ed me off, im sure she would not feel that way if it were her son

Re: I AM LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would totally be pi$$ed. I totally agree with you. My son was punched in the cafeteria last week and I was so angry also in the eye. He was sent to the nurses office and they didnt even call or write a note home. Which they are suppose to do. I found out 2 days later by an aide in the school. I feel they should have called me regardless of how bad it seems to them. G-D forbid something happens to his eye.

Def. sit down with the principal & your son to talk.

I would be SO pi$$ed and I completely agree with you. Yes you should teach your son to defend himself and that AP should be getting the other boys parents involved too.

I hope your son is okay!

Re: I AM LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know it's difficult balancing the "defend yourself" vs. what is appropriate. It was tough for me when my 3 year old punched another boy back.

I agree your son should know how to defend himself and should not let himself be bullied. However, if you take the approach that it's ok to hit back - it can escalate the situation. Maybe teaching him ways to diffuse a situation before it gets physical (or as my 2 year old says "use your words"). If all else fails than fall back to the punching.

No one wants the kids who tattles on classmates and "telling the teacher", but maybe encouraging hitting back as a last resort...that may appease all parties.
