I am looking to open a new bank account - please help
I have been a life long citibanker, but in light of recent events I decided to open an account at a different bank and start switching my money over.
I am wonder what bank is safe and reliable to go with these days?
The banks closest to me (and the easiest for me to bank at) are:
Chase TD bank Cap. One bank
I am thinking maybe Chase? Does anyone know how they are holding up?

Chase is sound..I'd do chase or TD Bank.
I have an account with Wachovia for the longest time, and now that wells fargo has them i still don't plan on switching. Wells fargo is a sound too.

Re: I am looking to open a new bank account - please help
We had Commerce which turned into TD Bank. I was a bit peeved at first but I actually really like them. The hours are very convenient and haven't had any problems at all. I would feel confidant recommending them.

I think Chase is having a promo right now that if you open an account with them and do direct deposit, they will give you $125.

I don't suggest BofA. I have all of that with Chase.

I agree with not choosing BOA. My husband has an account with them and they have been nothing short of a nightmare. He's actually closing his BOA account this weekend. I have used Capital One for at least ten years (granted they've changed management a few times) and have had no problems.

I have BofA and have had no problems with them. I had Fleet and then Fleet switched to BofA.
Though I am going to open a seperate savings account in the summer. We are thinking of Bethpage CU..does anyone have opinions on them??

What's wrong with Citi?
Do you really think they are going under and you won't get your money?
If you're unhappy about the service or if someone is offering you a good deal then go get another account, but your account is FDIC insured.

I was wondering the same thing.

I am wondering the same thing as well. Just now I went to make a deposit and asked the info desk person a question. She asked my co-worker who was with me if she wanted to open an account and I jokingly said, "oh but isn't Citibank becoming nationalized?" - and she said, think about it, now the government would be backing the bank (or something to that extent).
So I'm just thinking, I don't have anywhere near 250K in the bank (the amt that's FDIC insured) nor the 100K that was the previous limit to the FDIC insured amount. So I should be ok staying with Citibank... right?

Re: I am looking to open a new bank account - please help
I'd choose TD out of those 3. Based of their credit card practices, I refuse to bank with Chase or Cap One.
But, if I were you, I would go with a credit union.

either way, whether they nationalize the bank or not, it's not going anywhere..meaning your money is safe.

Citibank is going nowhere. And even if they go under, your money is safe.
Frankly any bank at any time can go under. I had six figures deposited at IndyMac when they went under. My money didn't disappear.

I've had my Citibank account since 1992. Since I have had the account for so long, I can deposit checks up to 50k with them and have them go in as cash with no hold times.
You may want to check with Citi to see what your account is eligable for. That 50k same as cash feature on my checking account is golden to me. If I deposit a 40k check at Chase, I have to wait something like 7 days for the funds to clear.
