I Am SO Nervous!

we are going away soon (in less than 2 weeks) and for the first time I am leaving the dogs home alone!
i am going to be away for 3 days. i am having my friend stop by 3 times while we're away to feed them, change wee wee pads, play with them, etc.


any advice?

I'd have more than 1 person do it, just in case she has something come up and can't make it for 1 of the visits.

Also, when we go away, we have someone stay at our place to doggie-sit. Would someone do that for you?

I don't know of anyone that would really be up for staying here though.

My friend who is doing it MAY spend the night once though but I am not sure.

I was thinking of having my other friend do it as well.
Maybe I should ask her to go on the other two days.


Rebecca.... they would NEVER let anyone walk them but us! lol Well, at least i know Lukin wouldnt/ the girls i dont know.
But to be honest, i wouldnt trust anyone walking them. I'd be too afraid. Its hard for 1 person to walk three rambunctious dogs.

They are small and wee wee pad trained as well, so i'd just prefer they use the pads while we're away, this way theres no chance of them getting free.

I'm paranoid enough already!

That is a tough one. When we left Denver for a week, my brother housesat and I still cried and called or e-mailed every day. I feel you!

Is there a Pet Smart or anything near you that offers doggy day care? I know Pet Smart has a big room where dogs can play with other dogs under their supervision for 6-8 hours a day, if you trust someone to take them there.

I TOTALLY understand your paranoia. I saw a dog (a huge swiss mountain dog) run away from his walker in the Village.

But in the future, if you ever need a sitter, FM me! I know how hard it is to leave them.

I think I've decided to ask my other friend to come on the opposite days as my original "sitter".

If I lived near you, I would DEFINITELY pet sit for ya...
I def think you should have someone check on them at least once a day....are there any neighbors who might be willing to do it?

I am sorry but leaving your dogs like that is very irresponsible!
If you are going away you should have someone staying with them
and as far as not trusting someone to walk them, but your not worried about leaving them like that??

and I think you should look for a dog sitter to stay with them

Maybe I am not understanding, are you planning on leaving your dogs alone for 3-4 days with someone popping in to see them? Don't you think that's cruel?

umm, YES they do! and they do exactly what i am doing.
do you think its EASY to find someone ---that you trust--- to stay at your house for a few days? cuz its not.

and the girls watching tehm are not "popping in". they are staying for hours at a tiem and i think each is staying over for a night.

eta: im a very good pet owner and ive never seen you guys on this board before so i htink its kinda funny how youre coming on here flaming me for someting im already having enough of a hard itme with.... when you dont even know the half of it

I guess since I am not on this board much I am not entitled to an opinion about leaving dogs alone for long periods of time when they are not used to it, and relying on someone to really hang out with them for a few hours a day? Umm, ok. Forget what I said and have a nice trip.

i dont care if youre on this board every post or none at all, but this thread was for SUPPORT.

Honestly, your opinion means nothing to me though becuase i know they are in good hands and will be happy and healthy and safe. They would prefer people they know to come play with them for a few hours or spend the night rather than a stranger to sit around for the whole time. Theres not much they can get into here. We dont crate them and I know my dogs. They keep each other company and actually enjoy their independence when we are not at home. But like I said, they wont be alone for that long, so i dont see what the problem is.

I am on the boards a lot but really only post on the pregnancy board
I was not flaming you I was just giving my opinion
and as I said I do think going on vacation and not having someone to stay with your dogs is irresponsible
There are so many options for people who have no one to stay with their dogs!
I do think leaving them like you are is not right
but that is JMO

do you mean because they wont be there for 72 hours straight? thats what im not following. think about it. if im gone for three days and one firend stays over one night and my other friend another night and then they both visit on the other day how is that NOT having someone stay with them?
these people DO have jobs, just like we do if we were home. i cant expect anyone to stay 72 straight hours.

and i will NOT leave them at a day care type place. that is OUT of the question.

I think having someone come in and check on your dogs in their home is very responsible. They will probably be much less stressed and more comfortable than they would if they were in a kennell.
As long as your friends are responsible which I'm sure they are, they will be fine. And yes people DO go away all the time.
Try not to stress- I'd get them a few new toys if you could so they can be amused while you are away and also some treats when you come back. Do they like TV? I always leave the radio on for our puppy. We are going to a wedding tonight and putting a TV on for her so its not so boring.

i actually went and bought them each a present for each day we're gone, so they will be getting three surprises and i think theyll like that. each day im having one of teh girls bring something new for them.
i think im going to either leave animal planet on or the radio. def one, but not sure which yet.

It is extremely difficult to leave your dogs when you go on vacation and Jes is having a hard enough time with it. She is going to have people stay with her dogs. Anyone who has ever seen her on these boards knows that her dogs mean everything to her and she would never do anything to put them in harm's way.
