I am so tired of doing my nails- only to have them peel and chip 2 days later!

It's ridiculous.
I use so called "good" polish- OPI, Essie, etc and I did my nails on Sunday with OPI. Yesterday I noticed a slight chip here and there.
Today, it is peeling off of my right hand in huge pieces... it looks terrible.
I can't even touch it up -it's that bad- I have to take all the polish off and do it over. 2 DAYS LATER!!! Chat Icon

I use a good top coat and base coat too.

I swear- this is why I like just going natural on my nails- this is ridiculous!

This happens to me too. I had wraps on my nails for years and recently took them off. It was great cause polish wouldnt chip, but it became too time consuming & expensive. Now my nail polish chips in a day. It sucks!

the same thing happens to me - especially since i am always typing and washing my hands as well.

i have found that getting a professional mani makes it last longer by a few days. not much, but it's something.

I go to a nail salon that offers a gel manicure by OPI. They call it a two week manicure. I have only tried it twice. The first time I waited about two and a half weeks because I was going away. It stayed on and my nails looked so shinny. You did see nail growth though. Right now I have had it on for a little more then a week, but was on vacation and have lived in the water. One of my nails does have a chip.

My trick is to NOT use a base coat.

Works like a charm. Chat Icon

Ah ha! Interesting.
I am guessing that the polish adheres better when it's right on the nail surface...
I am going to try this later!
Last night I took off all the polish in a fit of rage and just left my nails bare..
But they look like crap bare...

Thanks for the tip!

Even when I get my nails professionally done, they only last 2-3 days. So I started to get my nails buffed instead, and you can also buy a cheap buffer in the drugstore and do it yourself. My nails always look glossy and natural and I don't wear polish.

I always had the same problem! I started using this combo of products below and my manicure can last for upto a week! (Note: I don't wash dishes - when I used to wash them all the time, nothing I did really stopped them from chipping).

OPI base coat (it has a slight tint in the bottle, but not when you wear it)

Nail polish (I use Essie colors) - one or 2 coats

OPI top coat

I bought them at Duane Reade before my wedding and SERIOUSLY it was the best investment! They're not THAT expensive (like what, $6-8 a bottle??), but using this combo really makes my manicures last - I do my own these days.

Mine chip too. I used to go all natural but felt like I was a kid.

Now I just get really light colors so chips aren't as noticeable.

I've actually been getting weekly manicures - I started three weeks ago. The polish has stayed on pretty well and I'm really hard on my hands and nails - so far, so good.

If you can swing it - I suggest having them professionally done. Also if your nails are longer than your fingertips, polish all around the tips, kwim?

I had a gel manicure for the first time about 2 1/2 weeks ago and really like how it looks. I'd get it again.

Re: I am so tired of doing my nails- only to have them peel and chip 2 days later!

Have you tried No Chip by Orly? My grandmother has this problem with nail polish chipping, and since she started using this stuff they don't chip as quickly..

My polish never chips.. I can have it on for 2 weeks and besides regrowth because my nails grow at warp speed they look perfect. I really think it depends on your nails...

I think Essie sells a rubber "like" base coat. it sticks to your nails, and the polish sticks to it. It has a green tint if I remember correctly... worth a shot...

Re: I am so tired of doing my nails- only to have them peel and chip 2 days later!

are your hands in water alot?
Do you use cleaning products without gloves?

I got a manicure 2 weeks ago and my nails are barely starting to chip. they are more grown out then chipping.

I would say it depends on how much you do with your hands. Water, washing dishes, even doing laundry can hurt the nail polish

I don't do many dishes- most everything goes in the dishwasher except pots and pans and with the summer I havent' cooked on the stove that much.

Maybe it's from being in the pool?

Either way I'm going to try some of these suggestions so thanks ladies!

I had tried Revlon Colorstay polish once (comes in a box with the polish and a top coat and you dont' use a base coat)
It did stay on longer BUT trying to get it off was HORRIBLE.
I had to buy pure acetone to remove it...and my nails were stained for weeks afterwards...

I put on clear every day on top of the polish, it seems to help. I also try to use light colors so you cannot see the chips as much. HTH

I got a gel manicure yesterday

I am excited to see if there is a difference - it was double the price $15 but if it lasts 2 weeks then it's worth it

What do they do in a gel manicure that is different from a regular one? I stopped getting manicure's because the polish chips within a day and I have to take it off because it drives me crazy!

I get my nails done in Wantagh and the gel manicure they use is by OPI. They use a primer first and while they are doing one hand, the other is drying under uv lights. After the primer, the gel polish goes on next. It looks like regular nail polish but thicker. They put two coats and once again in between, they dry under the uv lights.
Then the top coat goes on. My nails are instantly dry after going under the lights and stay very shinny.

The next time you go back, you nails have to soak. Usually they soak as I get a pedicure. The gel gets pushed back to be removed. It does take longer than a regular manicure, but it really does last. I just wish they had more colors to choose from.
