He is so little. He is in the 5th Percentile. He only weighs 14 lbs 7 oz. And still not fitting in 6 month clothes. I am so worried. He is also only 25 inches tall. When I tell people he is 6 months old they think he is soo much youngerChat Icon

Don't worry about what other people say or think, as long as your pediatrician and YOU are okay with it and discuss it, that is all you have to worry about. Chat Icon

I agree about not worrying based on what other people say...he obviously has more skills than a 3 or 4 month old - the kid is standing in your avatar!! What does the doctor say?

Then I wouldn't worry. Some babies are just smaller than others. Some babies are bigger. Don't go what other people say. Some people tell my Jordy looks much bigger than her age. Other people say she looks much younger. If he is developing property and the doctor isn't worried, I;m sure everything is fine.

Re: I am so worried that Andrew is not thriving...

Failure to thrive is not really about size but about development. Is your son sickly, unable to develop?
Don't worry about his weight...there is a 5th% for a reason, because children fall within a range of sizes.

Re: I am so worried that Andrew is not thriving...

I know it's so hard not to worry. But if the Dr. is OK with it then I"m sure he is fine!! I was afraid my son was obese since he was in the 95th% (LOL)...worrying on the other end of the spectrum. The Dr. reassured me that babies are big and small just like adults and not to worry. Now DS is sick/teething and not eating enough for like 3 weeks and I'm worried about that too Chat Icon I think it's part of motherhood, the constant worrying... my mom says just wait til he gets his license!
Look at him standing! He looks like a healthy, happy boy :)

I totally agree - babies come in all different sizes!! I find it so funny that a stranger will exclaim "wow he is so tiny for his age," and then a little later another stranger will say "wow he is so big for his age." Don't listen!! I used to get so nervous, esp bc my son is also in the 5% for weight, but the 95% for height. But he is healthy and so happy all the time, that I don't worry anymore.

I also would ignore what people say to you. He is healthy and happy and that is all that counts. People always tell me DS is a big boy for 7.5 months and really dont think he is (he is 28 inches tall and 20.5 pounds as of 2 weeks ago). All babies grow at different rates

Matthew turned 6 months yesterday and at his last appointment which was November 18 he weighed 13lbs and 13 ounces. I guess now he has to be around 14lbs. Maybe close to Andrew's weight. Matthew's doctor said he expected to see a little bit more than 13lbs but still said there was nothing to worry about at all. As long as he is not in danger of being underweight.

I remember one of my best friends telling me that when her daughter was little that by her 1st birthday she was not even weighing 20lbs. She was always very small and petite.

Same here - Jesse is always at the bottom of the weight percentiles but the top of the height. My doctor said as long as they stay at the same level, they are progressing normally. It is what is normal for them. If he was at the 75% and then dropped to 15%, they would worry. It's all about consistency.

Don't stress, some kids are just small. Miranda is 14 months and barely 18lbs. She's in the 15th percentile for height and 2nd for weight. As long as he's growing and meeting milestones don't worry yourself. There's not much you can do. Kids eat what and how much they want. YOu can't force it in them. It took me months to stop worrying unless the doctors decided to worry.

So true...

Matthew is 6 months and probably weighs the same as Andrew. I am not concerned unless he starts loosing weight...

Try not to stress- RJ has always been on the smaller side- 10th & 20th precentile- (although people find that hard to believe- I guess he looks big)

Every baby hits there spurts at different times-

As long as he is gaining- its fine....

My mom and brother are on the smaller side... so DS my very well take after them- and thats fine!

My nephew who is 15 months only weighs 18lbs. Granted he was born a preemie but still. He's growing up more in height. My SIL once told me that in 1 month he hadn't gained a pound. The doctors say he is healthy and fine.

I heard that after a year they don't gain weight anymore as rapidly as they when they were babies. So like the other ladies have said. It's just the way some babies are. Some are small framed. My brother was the same. He eats eats eats and is always skinny. Now it seems like my nephew is going to be just like his daddy, where he eats a lot but still remains small framed.

Try not to worry unless there is a reason too...

Go by your Ped. Bella lands in the 50th percentile for weight, but she is still in 12 month clothes (some she just started wearing--she was in 9 month onesies from Carter until just last month) and will be 15 months on Friday...I am fine with whatever size she is as long as my doc is....

She is a little shorty...but starting to catch up. I noticed how much she has grown in the last few months.

DS at 6 months old is still fitting into size 0-3 months.

He's got this pair of levis jeans that are size 3-6mos and are big on him. Guess it depends on the clothes. Some 3-6mos clothes fit him perfect but others are big. When people ask me what size he is in clothes I feel so confused as to what to answer because the size varies...

And this is the exact reason my ped. does not talk percentiles. He doesn't even have a growth chart to show you. He just worries about if she's healthy, happy and developing.Chat Icon

Really, don't let percentiles bother you. People come in all shapes and sizes, and its true for babies. My Lauren is a chubber, she is 18 lbs 9 oz! Does that mean she is overweight at 95% percentile? Of course not! They will all even out and grow to what they shoudl be. Enjoy your little guy! He's so cute!
