I ate Ricotta Cheese!!!

I know that some cheeses aren't good while pregnant but I read somewhere that Ricotta was ok. Today I saw it on the no list! I'm only 5 weeks and I know a lot of girls sometimes don't even know they're pregnant by now so please tell me I'll be ok (and the baby). I ate it the past week almost everyday, about 1/4 cup.

Where did you get it? Store bought? It's totally fine!! I eat it! Check the label I'm SURE it says pasteurized milk etc on it. Unless someone made it raw or you bought it from some farm, you're totally fine!!!

Stop and Shop, Doesn't say pasteurized or unpasteurized. Wasn't made buy an individual or from a farm.

I knew I saw it on the safe list... but then in the app Ovia, it was listed as unsafe and that's what made me post.

Thank you girls!

It's fine.

ETA: My doctor doesn't even have a "No" list. Everything in moderation.

I eat sushi and cold cuts on occasion. As long as they're from a reputable place. The risk of listeria is in a lot more things regularly eaten by pregnant women than soft cheeses, sushi, and cold cuts!

Oh that's good to know. I wanted spinach pie from the Greek place and of course there's feta in it!

Re: I ate Ricotta Cheese!!!

I drank heavily before I knew I was pregnant. Like heavily. I told my dr and he said it was fine. I said, you don't understand, I drank A LOT. He laughed and assured me it was fine that you don't even share blood stream with the baby until after 6 weeks. His words..."at that point it's just cells dividing."
I doubt a little ricotta will harm you.

For the record I ate it the whole pregnancy. Never knew you weren't supposed to.

Totally fine. I'm honestly more worried eating fresh spinach and fruits than pasteurized cheese.

It's safe if pastureized. So is feta.

The block feta in greek restaurants is fine. Ask them and they will tell you if it is pasturized....Go eat and enjoy.

As far as the ricotta... It is safe!

Anything you can buy in the supermarket will be pasteurized / safe. The only cheeses you'd have to worry about would be from a farmer's market or something. Enjoy your cheese!

I ate Ricotta Cheese!!!

I think you only have to worry when it's made fresh. Like some restaurants make their mozzarella, ricotta, etc. I know someone on here said blue cheese was not safe at Strip Steak and at Carrabas they'll tell you the Caesar dressing has raw egg. These are the things you need to be cautious of.

I was pregnant in Paris (but miscarried). You gave to be much more careful in Europe because stuff isn't usually pasteurized. My sister who lives there said french women will drink and smoke pregnant but won't eat the cheese. In fact my mom and I almost switched desserts one night, but I thought better of it because hers was cream based, sure enough she got super sick for 2 days from it.

I've had it before with no issues. The ones you buy in the store are pasturized.

Re: I ate Ricotta Cheese!!!

The other thing to remember with soft cheeses is that it's okay if it's not pasteurized as long as you're eating it when it's cooked or warmed until steaming hot. Were you eating it raw? If so like the other girl said you're fine but just to know that you could also eat it if it's been cooked.

Ovia ap lists ALL cheeses (basically) as unsafe, it also lists all sausages, all teas, etc, as unsafe. You have to make the best judgement calls for yourself.
