and also they are doing something for the seniors in my area tomorrow. At 820 pm. Honk your horns and bang pots and pans for 20 minutes. Yes TWENTY whole minutes to honor the class of 2020.
While it's a nice gesture and i feel so horrible for the Seniors this year who are missing out on literally everything and memories they will never get back, I highly doubt this will make up for it.
Like any Senior is going to say...
Wow, i feel sooo much better about missing my prom, my senior trip, my graduation because I heard 20 minutes of cacophony in my honor.

Mom, how was your senior prom? Oh I didn't have one dear. But the community honked their horns for 20 minutes and it was magical!!!

Ok and I am going to say it so flame away but am I the only one getting tired of the birthday parades and beeping horns everyday some days multiple times? I am writing this as one is coming by, the 2nd one today and I don’t live on a main road.
I am not a party pooper at all but it all is becoming overkill. Every story on the news is just another parade.

Omg. I'm glad you said it. I was thinking it yesterday as one blocked traffic on my street and kids were precariously hanging out of car windows and and sunroofs of moving vehicles. But I tend to be a bitchh so I scolded myself for thinking it .
i also think it's actually sad and depressing if you think about it. No party. No friends. Just a bunch of honking cars. I think my DD would be even sader if we had to do that on her birthday. Depressing

I think it’s nice for the kids vs. doing nothing if you have enough people. My son had his birthday party on March 7th at a bowling alley. He is 5 and it was his first real birthday party. So sad how this is going to be going forward. If we had a parade instead of a party it would have been a sad turnout, like 2 cars. I would feel weird asking classmates to do it so it would just be small family. I can’t wait for some normalcy to return Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know. It's terrible.

i hate this zoom bullshitt too.
I don't like being on video and I find it annoying with everyone talking over each other.
Honestly if I can't meet up in person i will just skip it until I can.
I don't need to see others drinking in tiny video boxes.
I'd rather go read my book with my glass of wine or go take a bath.

Yep I was invited to one this weekend and I do not feel like doing my makeup to go on (old classmates). Only interested in seeing my friends I see IRL whom I wouldn’t care about the no makeup but can wait until we can go out again.

I hosted one for my cousin last week for her bday, because she was feeling really down and has been dealing with a lot. It was actually a lot of fun and just family, so no one was forced to get dressed. She was surprised and happy.

However, I opened a can of worms because now I was forced to do one for my bday tomorrow because it’s also my aunts bday. And my sister is adamant since it’s a milestone one for me and she wants to see me. If it wasn’t my aunts birthday I would have totally shut it down.

So tomorrow I am doing one for my aunt and myself, which, made me feel silly to send out . No one in my family knows how to set it up in zoom and it’s my account. Chat Icon Chat Icon

OP feel better and order out, somewhere fun! I was feeling low last week and ordered pretty much everyday. It made me feel better. Some places are selling cocktails to pick up.

My son is doing horrible in school, and they actually doing work. I’ve gotten several emails and if he doesn’t get it together he will fail. This whole thing sucks, it’s weighing people down mentally and emotionally. Hang in there Chat Icon

I can’t do this anymore!!!

I hear you. I am soooooo over this too. I need to get out. I need the kids to get out. I don't want my husband home 24/7 either lol. My one daughter I gave up on teaching as she is severly delayed, can't read and sitting online is doing absolutely nothing for her. I told her teachers last week that I was done. I'll do my own thing with her. My older one, who is autistic is doing well remote learning but the social thing is absolutely a nightmare. I posted before about her "friends" and I swear I have never heard a more whiny nasty bunch of girls ever in my life. It's exhausting keeping up with their drama. I also hate zoom meetings. I hate being on video and I am technically challenged. I accidentaly flashed my whole PTA Board the other night. I'm exhausted. I just want to have 5 minutes to myself, not to much to ask! Then I think of all the people sick/dying and the people working on the front lines and I feel like a *****.

i had my breakdown on Monday and I plan on writing the superintendent.

The lack of effort being put by some teachers is shameful. Yep I am saying it shameful.

Uploading documents for kids and parents to learn on their own is NOT Ok!!

There are districts out there hosting classes or minimally doing prerecorded lessons! have teachers available whenever needed.

My DS teacher isnt even making us hand in the work. I can just say its done and they wold have no clue.

Not ok at all. they are getting paid and some good money they should be doing their job.

i should not be expected to teach my children esp. when I am still working full time

yes I know teachers are parents too but there is no reason why a teacher cant minimally prerecord lessons at some point of the day to upload for kids to watch the next day to go with the lesson.

I find it also unfair that some teachers/school districts are actually putting in effort and others are not.

Not fair to the teachers that they are dong all this work and other teachers are barely doing anything and not fair to students and parents!!

My daughter is in 1st grade and her teacher records a video explaining the math lesson and then they have to complete the assignment. But they only have math and reading. Then there is science that is due over a week or 2 weeks...

I'm done with this. Teachers are parents is not an excuse. I'm a parent, my friends are parents, my coworkers are parents. We're all working 10+ hour days and are frequently unavailable because we're on video calls.

I want to know what the difference is between us and teachers.

I'm not saying this to blast teachers, there are teachers who have posted on here who sound awesome and I'm sure tons are doing an amazing job.

But the ones using "I'm a parent" as an excuse? No.

Wow I can't believe some teachers are getting away with just posting work sheets and links to You Tube videos! Completely unfair to the kids, and to the teachers who really are going above & beyond. My 3rd grader has an hour long zoom meeting a day. Monday is an ELA lesson, Tuesday Math, Wednesday Religion (catholic school), Thursday Social Studies, & Friday Science. On top of the meeting, the teacher prerecords lessons for everything else each day. He starts his work at 9 am, has lunch/free time from 11:30-12:30, and then is done for the day at 2:30. This weekend we have to work on a Social Studies project about land forms. Yes, there are some links to YouTube videos. But no worksheets- the principal said teacher may not ever ask parents to print out stuff at home. How fair is it that some teachers are doing this, and others are just copy & pasting links?

ETA: I am a Pre-k teacher in a different Catholic school than the one my children go to. Pre-K, and I have to zoom with them twice a week, and post daily activities and lessons. This week my para & I are meeting small groups daily at noon to have "lunch" with them via zoom. I have put together a virtual field trip to Disney for them. It enrages me to hear that there are teachers doing nothing. This isn't easy. But at least try, the kids need you!

Re: I can’t do this anymore!!!

I understand. It is getting to me. I was feeling it at night, but yesterday I woke up in a bad mood. It's official that DS won't be back to school the rest of the school year, and when I learned that, it was like I couldn't see the end of the tunnel. I have snapped at DH... I hate seeing things all over the whole time, boxes with stuff we might need, dining table became DH's office. I don't want to do zoom with anyone... It is pointless for me.

Friends that were the most afraid and judgmental about what others did in this situation, have been doing things that make me Chat Icon like having at home birthday celebrations or moving away and driving for 16 hours. My tolerance is getting thinner.

OP, order out if it makes you day easier. We didn't at the beginning and I was planning on cooking a lot. Now I don't want to. I don't stop cleaning because the dishes multiply miraculously. My nails are the shortest ever with all the cleaning. You have to do things for your mental health. Hugs and hang in there! Chat Icon

Yes, you’re right. I think thats why we had fun because it was just family. So no one cared.

I didn’t want to do it for my birthday because I am being a sour puss. I don’t really make a fuss for my birthdays but since it’s my 40th we were going to Nashville. The plan was to rent a big house, have the whole family etc. So the fact that this didn’t happen and me starting to mentally break down about 2 weeks ago, I was trying to not do anything.

But at the end of the day, I’m sure once I see my big crazy family, I will enjoy it. They are insane.

Re: I can’t do this anymore!!!

There is something about this week...everyone I talk to is feeling the same.

I can't take the non-stop work. School work, work work and house work. I never get a break or down time. What's Tiger King? No time to watch TV! It's 12:51 am and I just finished work working. All day long I'm squeezing in work with my kids needs and it's ridiculous. And I'm bitter that my DH goes off to work everyday, business as usual, and then he comes home, "relieves me" so I can go to work. At 5 pm. I'm supposed to start my work day at 5 after I have been catering to these kids all day? It's infuriating.

OP: I have been a religious online grocery shopper for years. I have officially thrown in the towel. It's been way too hard to get a spot.
I went Sunday morning, early, and I banged it out. Although I did dilly dally a bit because I liked being all by myself and out in public. Just go and take precautions. It's good for the soul.

As for the bday parades, I don't mind them. They make me, personally, want to cry because it's sad to me but it makes the kids so happy and what else am I doing anyway? I can ride by a kids house beep and wave and be home in 10 minutes. I just made that kids day a lot brighter and I got some air. Win/win.

Speaking of air, could the mutha effing sun come out and stay out???

It is most likely the school's district decision and the teachers' hands are tied.

I teach in a private school in NYC, and I am on Zoom 3-4 times a day with my class and then 1-2 more times a day with smaller groups of students.

When I talk to my friends who teach on LI, almost all of them received very strongly worded emails that any type of "live" lesson is strictly prohibited because of the potential security issues with programs like Zoom.

When it comes to teachers pre-recording lessons for their students, that also usually isn't allowed by the district. A lot of the curriculum programs that schools use have not given permission for their programs and lessons to be put online, so then you get into copyright issues if you are using material from a copyrighted program.

Before you email the superintendent about the "shameful" "lack of effort" by the teachers, I would email to inquire what the district's expectations of their teachers are. Because more likely than not, they are just following what was put into place for them by the district and don't have a choice.

I agree. I can't imagine its up to the individual teachers. It has to be a distinct wide decision.
Zoom is not secure at all. Other superior video conference apps like Webex are very expensive.
No way would districts be able to purchase something like that for every student and teacher.
My daughter is pretty much just getting worksheets and apps/you tube videos but so is everyone I talk to in our district. It has to be a district wide directive

Because more likely than not, they are just following what was put into place for them by the district and don't have a choice.

I am a speech therapist in NYC and my son attends a LI district. This week I felt so burned up at what my son's teacher does as opposed to how much work I put in on a daily basis. I am doing live teletherapy with most of my caseload, whereas my son's related service providers are just sending me e-mails with activities. My son's teacher posts to Google Classroom but that's it, and one live session a week with no actual teaching. But like another poster said, I do need to remind myself that this is what the teacher must be directing. But still I got so worked up this because my son won't do his work and why should I be the one doing all the teaching? Great so you are posting the pages in the Math workbook to do, and great so you are posting the new sight words. I know my son is only in kindergarten but I feel the younger ones understand less of what is going on and would benefit from more direct instruction. I pay all these school taxes and for what? Ugh, rant done for now.

And yes I need to run away lol. My DH is taking my son to get his stitches out soon and I will get the house to myself an hour! I'll be working but still. And yes my son had to get stitches on his chin last week lol.

I can’t do this anymore!!!

My 4th grader has a Google Meet each Thursday. They talk about the book they are reading (it's by reading group) and the teachers go over administrative business (this week they explained their grading process).

My 2nd grader just completes sheets and watches videos. They now have an app set up where they can submit work for review but, it's annoying (they scan worksheets on and you need to update them with your finger which a huge practice of fine motor skills - I usually ask my son what he thinks the answer is and I do it because it leads to tears). He is also writing a research paper on Antarctica - which has been going on for a month now (a three paragraph essay with an intro and conclusion - this week we introduced him to a thesaurus - which my 4th grader had never heard of...)

Our teachers only have to be available 4 hours a week for questions (I find my 4th graders teachers are available all morning, except when they are in a Google Meet, but he has 2).

I saw on News12 that Cuomo is expected to announce the decision about schools today (not sure if they have intel or they are just assuming because he said this week lol).

Yes the non-stop work! I feel like I can't mind off of some kind of work. On the other hand, keeping busy keeps my mind of the never endingness of this all.

i had my breakdown on Monday and I plan on writing the superintendent.

I already emailed asking what the plan was weeks ago becuase I told them at this rate I will hold my son back because he will not be ready to move on. What was the response they gave me a sub teacher to work one on one when needed. While that teacher as been a god send and I appreciate him so much its still bulllshit and I love that the sub can do it what the hellll is my sons teacher doing. Oh i know posting stupid messages online celebrating her kids bday and posting worksheets. Glad she is gets to do things during the day while she is supposed to be working and I am over here working FT and doing her job and teaching my kid

My district uses google classroom they are allowed to use google meet thats how we meet with the sub. my son get extra help in math that teacher has been posting her self going over the lesson and then has the kids do their math sheet and hand them.

My district has 5 elementary schools 1 middle school and 1 high school and from what I hear and see online some teachers put effort in and others dont..

If there is district wide rules/plans then they should be communicating that to parents it should not take parents to have to write to ask for it.

As someone else said I am letting them use excuses that they are parents too so i get live might not work but why am I they have a point. I have to join and host meetings thought out my day I cant use the excuse that I am a parent so I cant work. so why should they if they want to use that excuse then fine they shouldn't be getting paid. There should be no excuse why they can do nothing and its ok for them but not other teachers other professions!

I agree..I am only my computer interacting in some way with students, parents, and my co-workers from 8:20-3:30 with barely time to eat. I feel like I am drowning in work-planning, posting, grading, REPEAT.

And then I talk to some friends who work on LI who say they are home and bored, because the most they are allowed to do by their district is post one or two assignments a day.

Has your child's teacher actually said that they are a parent and therefore cannot go live?

Chat Icon

Yes yes yes. I just saw a pic pop up yesterday in my fb of someone who is exactly like this showing that she has gone out 3 times now to see friends. I don’t know if I will end the friendship but right now I am not answering or liking any of her posts as it annoys me.
