I can't remember if I asked this before, but how old did you transition to the Toddler Bed?

DH and I are thinking of getting rid of (well, lending...) our unused crib (sigh) late this summer when my brother and SIL will be switching their then 3 month old to the crib (it's their 3rd kid--they have used a dropside for 1 & 2 and our crib is totally brand new...)

DD will be about 20 months old in August. Is that too early for a toddler bed (a true toddler bed, not a twin...)

Thanks.

DS is 2 1/2 and he is still in his crib.

I have heard of kids being in cribs past 3 and those who are transitioned way before 2. I think you can do it any time you want!

Thanks! DD never really took to her crib. She wasin the basinet until 4 months old then in the crib from 4-7 months and then we co-slept from 7-11 months and now she just sleeps in her pack and play. She screams her head off when we put her near the crib. Chat Icon

My kids are all over the place on this one. We put DS in a toddler bed when he was only 14 months becasue he was climing out of the crib. He went to a twin bed when he was 3.5.

DD stayed in her crib until we had to put the baby in it. SHe'd probably still be in the crib if it was up to her. she was just over 3 when we took her out of the crib.

So maybe I should just get the twin? My nephew was in the toddler bed till he was 5.

DS is 3 1/2 and still in his crib. His full size bed is arriving on Thursday! We never converted his crib and we felt that a full would be a better investment for him.

With that said, I was in a twin bed until I moved out of my parents house at 25 and bought a queen sized bed Chat Icon

nope. They had bed rails to prevent that. They could get in and out of the bed on their own by those ages.

If I get a twin rather than a toddler, I am definitely going to get rails. DD rolls around a lot.

Wierd....I totally had wierd dreams about this last night. DH was working and it was a rare night that i actually slept thru the night w/o waking once before it was time to get up. I dreamt that I woke up and Zoey was walking around my room....somehow having gotten out of it on her own. Also dreamt that my big fat dog who can't even get up the stairs anymore got into her crib by busting through the rails and also that Zoey was breaking the rails and chewing on them! ?????? LOL, not really sure what's going on there but I have been thinking a lot about moving her into the converted toddler bed but I'm sure it wold be hard for me to get her to stay there. I think she is still too young.

Re: I can't remember if I asked this before, but how old did you transition to the Toddler Bed?

Honestly, I would keep her in a crib as long as possible. I moved DD at 3 to her twin bed, no rails, and she gets up anytime she wakes up now. I have tried everything to keep her in bed and not wake me up at 3am. This is a kid who slept through the night at 7 months and never woke up before so I am exhausted and frustrated now.

DS went into a toddler at 27 months and a twin last month at 34 months.

I would buy a twin with rails rather an a toddler IMO a toddler is really a waste of money

maybe you waited too long to make the switch and now its so new to her she is taking advantage? My girls are 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 and they never do this. In fact they wait in their rooms in the morning until I tell them to come out for breakfast. The only times they leave their room is to go pee, then they go back. Maybe they do so well because they have been in their beds for so long its all they really remember and its nothing "new" to them. Just a thoughtChat Icon

See the thing is, DD doesn't use her crib. She hates it. She'll only sleep in her PNP and it's in our room. We're going to make a few changes to our apartment this summer so that we can maximize our space and stay here as long as possible (we love it here in Park Slope, but we are already priced out and our Landlord is so nice as are our neighbors) which includes switching her room w/ the living room and I figured by that time, we should just take the crib out and give her her own bed. I thought a toddler bed would be a good transition since it's so low to the floor.

Oh, she is definately taking advantage. But she loved her crib and it was so comfy, I resisted the move. You are probably right that we waited too long but it was one of those, if its not broke, why fix it situations. I miss my full nights of sleep- especially now that I have a 13 month old who was never as good as sleeper as her. Chat Icon

Re: I can't remember if I asked this before, but how old did you transition to the Toddler Bed?

I wanted to keep my son on the crib as long as possible. Once he started climbing out I was worried for his safety. That was last week (21 months) and he has been in a toddler bed. She will go into a twin soon. The only reason why we did toddler bed first was that someone gave one to us, so we just plopped the crib mattress in and were good to go.

Re: I can't remember if I asked this before, but how old did you transition to the Toddler Bed?

With both my boys they were in beds around 18-20 months old. They were fine. No problems! Caiden went straight into a Twin race car bed and Connor went into a Thomas Toddler Bed. He loved Thomas, so that's why. I would have put him right in a twin bed, but he loved Thomas. He barely fit in his Toddler bed so shortly after we got it, he went into his own Twin Race car bed too. So now they both have one. Craigslist is great!
