I don't get why people are naming their kids after Obama and...
even in Hempstead they already changed one of the elementary schools to his name.
What if he ends up being the worst president ever? Then what?
I just think they should wait until the end of his term and see how it goes.
I understand that he has already made history but why not wait.

That was my thought as well. He is not even in office yet. It's nice to recognize his achievments so far, but this seems a little soon, no?

I'm obviously an Obama supporter, but I think it's a bit much for now too. In NYC I think the law is that someone has to be dead for two years before a school is named for them (at least, this used to be the rule.)
However, I really doubt that he will be the worst President ever. And that's all I'll say as to not cause drama.

I get why someone would name their child after someone they admire - I see nothing wrong with that, they could admire his tenure in the Senate, the way he has broken down barriers, etc.
I do think it's too soon to be naming a school after him though.

Big difference. Obama was elected by the masses. Paterson assumed an office. Perhaps if he gets re-elected or does something stupendous, then he may be equally as deserving as Obama or any other official who has accomplished good things in office.

I wasn't completely serious. But despite the fact that he assumed office, I give the man lots of credit for have getting as far as he has (prior to becoming Governor) considering his impairment.
You think Obama is deserving of a school naming at this point?

I can see why they named the school after him. No matter what type of president he is, he is the first African-American president. That's a great role model for those kids.

Obama already made history on becomeing a president. Yes, people nameing there kids is a bit much. People don't have anything else in thier mind when it comes to that.
The elementry school, well in Hempstead if this helps them adjust thier additude about education then i'm all for it.

I have very mixed feelings about this.. Hempstead is a predominantly black district, so their naming the school after Obama has less to do with his value or rather record as a president.. naming the school is in recognition of him being 'the first black..."
that being said, it's really funky that they chose Obama and didn't choose Paterson, especially when Paterson is 1. First Black.. 2. First Deaf.. and 3 FROM HEMPSTEAD!!!!
on top of all of that, I have issues with the school district worrying more about what is on the outside of the school than what is on the inside.. You can paint a 84 pinto,, change the doors, put seatcovers over the beat up seats.. but it's still a piece of junk..
with Hempstead's record over the past 4-5 years they need to worry less about names an dedication ceremonies and more about actually teaching the children they are charged with teaching.
as for naming their children after Barack.. name your kid whatever you want..

At this point, I don't think either one of them are worthy of having a school naming. Yes, Governor Paterson is most certainly worthy of the praise of his accomplishments thus far as is President Elect Obama. Being that it is rather difficult to detect sarcasm on a message board, I simply stated what I felt the differences between the two men were.
