I Don't Understand This Woman!!!

Would any of you eat food that was given to you by a stranger???? Or, worse, give it to your child? And even worse, EXPIRED foods????

I have a co-worker who is always giving or receiving things through Free Cycle. Yesterday took the friggin cake! A woman came to the office and dropped off three boxes full of Gogart (you know those yogart in a tube?) that expired on JANUARY 14th. One box was have used before this co-worker got it. She is going to give this to her 3 year-old-son. I swear, I don't know what the fluck this woman is thinking?????

Yeah, I would probably draw the line on the food. You would like to think most people are giving away stuff out of the goodness of their heart, but it's still a sick world we live in and you never can be too trusting.

Yes, it's true that there are sick people and I don't think (or hope) that isn't the case with this woman, but really? EXPIRED yogurt? To a 3-year-old? I am just shocked.

Did she realize they were expired?

As long as it was refrigerated properly, I don't see it being that big of a deal. Two weeks for yogurt isn't that bad......

I don't know what free cycle is....but getting it from a stranger does seems odd.....

While I would never do this, maybe your coworker has financial issues and needs to accept food, albeit expired?

I mean, if she's your coworker, then she obviously has a job with some sort of income, but hey, you never know what's behind some people's actions.

Yes and I called her on it. She said "it's yogurt and it doesn't really go bad," and she shrugged her shoulders and turned away. She comes from the "waste not, want not" mentality. She once tried to eat tuna salad from the frig that was almost 2 weeks old. I was going to throw the yogurt out when she went to the bank, but another co-worker told me to let it go.

No, not the case at all. She just doesn't like to waste things and sees nothing wrong with finding a use for things, including food.

Yea, I suppose it is gross, but MYOB. It is HER kid and HER choice. Throwing it out would have been incredibly rude and inappropriate. imo.

I have worked with people like this. Some of us call them 'cheap', they like to call themselves 'frugal' or 'resourceful'. You and I may not take part in such things, but hey, to each their own. And yeah, that would've been very rude to have thrown out her stuff.

ETA: Dairy products usually come with a Sell-By date, which is not the same as an Expiration Date. And even if something is past is Exp Date doesnt necessarily mean it's spoiled or rotten (within reasonable time period of course)

Re: I Don't Understand This Woman!!!

if it was nearly a month expired, that's just bad. I would do her kid a favor and throw it out, but that's just me...

I've had my daycare chastise me for accidentally giving my son yogurt that's 1 day expired (it was runny and looked off). So yeah, that stuff does go bad.

Yes, I agree it would have been rude and over the line had I thrown it out. I have socialized with her and have had her children at my house several times, so it is not as if what I don't see, I don't know. I just got incredibly upset when I found out she planned to feed them to her LO.

if it was something that was non perishable, maybe, and thats a big maybe, i would try it to see how it was and if it was worth saving, but i would never make my child a guinea pig!

Chat Icon Not good!!! Tonight I called Kraft and Bob Evans, about food that was unopened (cream cheese and mashed pot.) and the exp. dates were Jan. 22/31st, and in both cases I was told to pitch them. Mary

Re: I Don't Understand This Woman!!!

I'd eat yogurt that was that old. In fact I probably have yogurt in my fridge that old.

It takes weeks upon weeks for yogurt to go bad.

But I feel like a gogurt is easy enough to tamper with... I wouldn't give it to my kid.

Re: I Don't Understand This Woman!!!

Yah that is ust not cool!

Today I went to feed DS yogurt I bought 2 weeks ago, opened it, stirred it and it looked like it had tiny lumps. I tossed it. Not worth my little boy getting sick.

Im a teacher and i NEVER eat anything my kids parents make. I work in Queens and some of my students dont bathe for days or even change their clothes. Im sorry but who knows the condition of their home or if they wash their hands. Just gross!

Re: I Don't Understand This Woman!!!

the only MAIN issue i would have with it is that you can't guarantee that it was refrigerated the entire time it was in the woman's possession. what if it had spoiled and then re-refrigerated? kwim?

other than that... to each his own. although giving it to a kid is not somewhere i would go

Re: I Don't Understand This Woman!!!

No expired dairy products or products made with eggs or mayonnaise will EVER pass MY lips or those of my children. End of story. I don't care where they come from, how they were refrigerated or who tells me they are ok. My intestines and stapled stomach can't take that risk and frankly, I can't afford to stay home with two kids battling any sort of stomach bug that I could have avoided.
