I find it interesting that those on this board who do not see a problem with buying a pup from a pet store have yet to weigh in on the Oprah show.

We've had SO many debates on this site regarding PMs and BYB...

So, my question to those who see nothing wrong with buying a pup from a pet store or think they are "rescuing" a dog from a pet store is:

What are your thoughts on what was reported by the Oprah show?

I hope everyone that has EVER been in on a debate, or told the rest of us to clam up, actually saw the show and are so horrified that they are simply speechless?

but I too would like to hear honest thoughts such as

"Now I get it. I bought from a pet store once, unknowingly, but now that I know, never again." No one could every crucify someone who learns and changes what they do in the future and moves forward from the past.

I would think that is what one would feel after seeing Oprah or reading our posts about the show. People are talking about that show, everywhere...

I am still seeing this in my head, in my sleep, I can't get the sights out of my mind and thoughts.

I just can't. I am still traumatized by what I saw. Every dog I see I picture being trapped in a mill.

I keep telling my dogs all weekend how good they have it. I keep telling my girl dog she is lucky no one MADE her have babies. I keep looking at her belly and innocent little girl doggie "ninnies"... and seeing those poor nursing dogs' tumorous nipples. Oh I am sick and sad.

It's pretty amazing that there is such an outpour now, whereas a few months ago some of us were pegged as fanatics or dillusional.

I wish this never existed. I wish it were better regualted, and finally I wish that as the "higher species" we begin to take our knowledge to help the "meek" rather than abuse and neglect.

I really hope this reaction now stays with people, and that real changes are made.Chat Icon

Re: I find it interesting that those on this board who do not see a problem with buying a pup from a pet store have yet to weigh in on the Oprah show.

I didn't know anything about puppy mills and pet stores etc....so I didn't have a true opinion one way or another but I just watched the oprah this am...(I taped it).

I was crying for the poor dogs. It really really upset me, and I was so sad to see the conditions.

How any individual could keep animals in cages on chicken wire is beyond me. The poor, poor things. The fact they couldn't walk on regular floors baffled me...

I LOST IT when they said that when they are shown affection for the first time is when the tail starts wagging.. Chat Icon

It opened my eyes and I applaud Oprah for shedding light on this subject!!

I have a huge place in my heart for orphaned children and neglected kids..that has always been my passion and something I strive to help one day...this is a new cause to add to my list.

Me too. I LOST it. I went bezerk, crying my eyes out, screaming in sorrow. I really did. That broke my heart, that the dogs are so sad, they lack the simple innocence of a happy dog who regularly wags his/ her tail.

Join the club, it's a huge cause on my long list as well. Chat Icon

I was one of those people, and like i said in my last post i will never buy from another pet store again. I cried for the entire hour and for 30 minutes after the show. I think about the show every day since it was on. IT was very heart breaking.

ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!! OMG all I do is look at her beautiful little "ninnies" and kiss her smooth little belly. The sad thing is I did buy her from practically a "puppy mill" Shake a Paw. I was clueless. I never even heard of a puppy mill.!!!! When I got my Dog I became so educated. I know this is my dog and this was meant to be. But if I knew what I know now I would have never ever ever even walked in there. All I keep thinking is My LOLA's mommy is in one of those puppy mills!! How messed up is that!!!! I am so sick over this. Its all I think about.

You didn't know. I really didn't know years ago either, I just thought you don't buy from a pet store b/c they can be sick and die and crush your heart! I never thought about the moms.....you didn't know...but now you do.

I kiss my girl's sweet little soft belly all the time. I did get my dogs from a reputable breeder and even met my dog's moms...but I even felt bad to take her from her doggie mama. I am such a sap. I am glad you can relate. At least you know better for the future. Chat Icon

I am taking there word for it because I am sure If I walked in there they would never admitt it to me. How do I find out? And I really would love to know exactly which puppy mill my dog was in so I can really get myself sick. maybe I can rescue her mother like they did on Oprah!!! This is really making me crazy.

Your so sweet, that would be nice if you could rescue her mom!!! I would love that too for you.

Just google it, and many ladies on here can point you in the right direction. As the Humane Society rep said on Oprah 99.99% of pet stores get their dogs from mills b/c NO responsible reputable breeder would sell to a pet store. Bottom line, so you know just by that sadly.

And if you recall, Lisa Ling and Bill Smith traced back two pups based on their papers...and found their sad mommas in cages at mills. I think you know the truth here, and that SAP will lie to you...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

There is pretty much no chance that any pet store deals with a breeder, reason being:

Breeders think of their dogs and their dog's pups as an extension of their family. They pretty much feel the same way about those pups as we do about our pets. With that in mind they would want to know exactly who was getting their pups and what kind of home they're going to.

In addition, they want the adopting family to know that they can contact them anytime they have a question, concern or comment. Breeders will often keep a relationship with the families who adopt their pups. If a puppy is sold through a pet store or broker, they wouldn't have the opportunity to meet the family adopting their dog, they wouldn't know what kind of home they're going to.

Additionally, the pups from a pet store are not taken care of as well as those from a breeder. From the fact pet store dogs are in cages all day with not exercise, to the fact that those poor dogs sit in the dark from the time the store closes until the time they reopen. They're not socialized the way a dog with a breeder will be also.

The reason for this is that the breeder keeps their dogs with their family, interacting with people and other pets. Again, they are treated like a member of the family, the way you currently treat your pet.

That's basically the key thing. Breeders treat their dogs/puppies like members of the family (the way we all do), pet stores and puppy brokers treat these puppies/dogs like comodities. They may as well be a sack of wheat b/c they're treated the same way.

I hope this cleared up any question you may have... Chat Icon

I just got a new puppy yesterday and am pretty positive she's a responsible breeder. there are some things my husband feels are a little out of whack now that we got him home, but I'm pretty sure she's legit. She is part of the dachshund club of america and the dogs are very well taken care of, are AKC, etc. I do feel guilty that I did buy him when I've rescued dogs all of my life (my other 2, Jameson & O'Malley are rescue dogs) but I've been looking for a dachshund for a year and a half in shelters and petfinder.

I do feel it is very hard to find a purebreed responsible breeder. There are some signs that could make you think but then from websites, they pretty much seem like all breeders do the same thing, or say the same thing. I wish there was a good website out there for people that are in the position I was in to list everything out there that makes you know if it's a byob or not.

There are a ton of resources to help you find a legitimate breeder, including a list of questions to ask and breeder, what a breeder should be asking you, etc. The AKC website is a good place to start, as is the HSUS website, and the site for stoppuppymills.org

looking at a website for a breeder is not a definitive way to know if they are responsible or not, and "puppy referral sites" like nextdaypets.com, terrific pets.com or pets4you.com are actually loaded with PMs & BYBs.

ETA: This is not directed as a negative response to the poster quoted, I just wanted to bring the question down to the post so that eveyone can make the connection between the post and the answer.

when I went to Shake a Paw to get some kitty food I went into the puppy area to investigate. I actually wanted to see it for myself. Glad I did. There was a bin full of very young puppies for sale...$699. You couldn't tell the breed and they didn't even have their eyes open and they were suckling on nothing. Too young!!! I was appalled!

I did say something to one of the employees. I said, these dogs are too young to be sold.. I said it loud.

BTW-I did not go again to buy my food there. I went to another non-puppy selling store.
