Re: I find it interesting that those on this board who do not see a problem with buying a pup from a pet store have yet to weigh in on the Oprah show.

I had to fight DH about it. He doesn't know about all the puppy mill stuff. I informed him briefly and told him id on't want to support the store with any purchase. He finally relented.

It's pretty amazing that there is such an outpour now, whereas a few months ago some of us were pegged as fanatics or dillusional.
I wish this never existed. I wish it were better regualted, and finally I wish that as the "higher species" we begin to take our knowledge to help the "meek" rather than abuse and neglect.
I really hope this reaction now stays with people, and that real changes are made.

I just got a new puppy yesterday and am pretty positive she's a responsible breeder. there are some things my husband feels are a little out of whack now that we got him home, but I'm pretty sure she's legit. She is part of the dachshund club of america and the dogs are very well taken care of, are AKC, etc. I do feel guilty that I did buy him when I've rescued dogs all of my life (my other 2, Jameson & O'Malley are rescue dogs) but I've been looking for a dachshund for a year and a half in shelters and petfinder.
I do feel it is very hard to find a purebreed responsible breeder. There are some signs that could make you think but then from websites, they pretty much seem like all breeders do the same thing, or say the same thing. I wish there was a good website out there for people that are in the position I was in to list everything out there that makes you know if it's a byob or not.
Dont feel guilty for using a breeder, esp. since you also rescue dogs! We got our beautiful brindle bullmastiff from a breeder, but we do also plan on adopting/rescuing. As far as finding a responsible breeder, they are out there. Just make sure of a few points, to anyone looking to use a breeder. First off responbile breeders only breed one breed of dog. They do not sell to pet stores, and usually want to interview you. They should welcome you to their home should you choose to pick your pup up. They should be able to provide references, and give you health info and pedigree info. Our dog is AKC registered, and we were given pedigrees for sire and dam. Our breeders dogs were kept in her home, not in cages. They also do not overbreed. Usually 2 litters a year. and they will retire a dog after a certain amount of litters. That being said, your dogs are gorgeous! Congrats!
