I had to call the police today, and I'm irked.
Ok, I was sitting on my couch, and from where my balcony is, I can see the parking lot of my complex. I look down and see a MAN in our dumpster So I watch him a couple of minutes, and he didn't look homeless or anything, just a little rough around the edges, and he had a shopping cart. So as I'm watching, he starts ripping open people's garbage bags and READING THEIR MAIL! So that's when I had it because I USE that dumpster adn he could have been reading MY MAIL. And with identity theft so prevalent, I called the police. They came, they asked him his name and address, and I heard him give an address in the complex, but there's NO WAY he lives here. So the cop drove away. Next thing I know, the cop's at my door. He told me that the guy lives here, so there's nothing he can do. I was like, hello, did you do a check on him because he was JUST reading mail in the garbage and could have given you a name and address from THERE! And he said, no, he was just collecting bottles. ARGH! Did he NOT NOTICE there was not ONE SINGLE bottle or can that the guy had?! ARGH! This prompted me to go out and buy a shredder. So I advise everyone else to do the same because apparently, it's FINE to read other people's mail now.

That's ridiculous!
We bought a shredder back when we were living in our apartment because anyone could have had access to our trash. I am not one to be so cautious but these people are so crafty! We still shred everything.

The cop was a freaking jerk to me,too. I was like, I'm sorry, but I'm a young female who should not have to worry about bringing my garbage down to the dumpster and have some CRAZY man jump out at me! He just gave me a blank stare and left.

Considering I just got a phone call from one of my credit card companies today informing me of fradulent charges (over 10K worth of computer stuff charged to my account) I'm thankful you took the time to call the cops.
That's BS. In this day and age you shouldn't be able to go through other people's garbage. Leaving an item out on the curb (dresser, old door, etc) and someone picking it up is one thing but someone reading someone else's old mail

Buy a good one that makes it super easy to shred. W had one that did 3 pages and no staples and the shredding would pile up. We bought a $100 dollar 16 page cross cut shredder that shreds staples, credit cards, & Cds as well. definitely worth the extra money, we just shred everything.

I can't believe this guy didn't have to show ID. Good for you calling the cops!
I am an avid shredder...anything with even my name gets shredded.

I'm amazed that they didn't ID him. Obviously you wouldn't have called them if he was just collecting bottles . What BS.

Re: I had to call the police today, and I'm irked.
My brother is a police officer and I just showed him this. He told me that he runs into this kind of stuff all the time. If they don't see the guy looking at people's mail, and he claims he has no ID, they legally can not do anything but ask him to move along. And since the guy claimed that he lived there (he most likely lied to the police and said he didn't have his license on him) they can't make him leave the property. It sux, but that's the law.

What a jerk..What kind of cop is he?? We have a shredder too. I get very nervous about the identity theft. The shredder is a great thing go have!

Re: I had to call the police today, and I'm irked.
We also shred every piece of paper that has our name and addresses. Even the magazines and phamphlets we get, I take the pages with our names and shred them. Like the Victoria Secret's catalog that has that order page in the middle....I even take that out and shredded it. Anything with any of our names that I'm putting in the garbage, gets shredded. When you buy a shredder, buy it cross cut. It's best and if you buy the one that you can shred your credit cards and your insurance cards, much better. We've had ours for awhile and it's a great investment.
