i HATE picking paint colors
Vent: Our house is almost done and so i've begun my search for paint colors. Can i just say that i hate picking out paint colors!!!!!!! First of all... why is it that the store only has about 50 samples for all 500 choices they have. And why is it that the colors i seem to like... they don't have in the sample. So am i supposed to go and buy $12 quarts of paint and what if i don't like it? How many $12 quarts of paint do i need to buy before i find THE color?!?!?!
Seriously... i hate it when everyone says that i should like this stuff because i'm a girl BECAUSE I DON'T! I HATE IT!
(vent over)

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
Here's the kitchen that carries over into the dining room. Any suggestions on what color would look good (i'm not a fan of white). The cabinets are white and the countertops are a gray. Our dining room table is black. Any ideas???

I think a nice tan/beige/sand or red would look great.

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
Omg Im so with you, I was talking to a friend about this last night. Ive actually lost sleep over paint and had dreams about paint. Im not kidding!! We repainted almost every room in our house, its insane the amt of $ we have wasted!
Still, Im not 100% thrilled and the rooms that we didnt re-paint, I want to do those too and Im already thinking about colors I can do for our "next house"..DH thinks Im nuts!
Anyway our kitchen has gray countertops and off white cabinets and I used Butte Rock in our kitchen. Its a light tan/beige..but warm. I really like it and we got a ton of compliments on the color. We used this color in our LR/DR and kitchen cuz all 3 rooms carry into one another so I figured using one color was our best bet.
Good luck!!!
I suggest buying the quart to test out anyway, because it's better to spend the $12 than to have to buy gallons of new paint (like we did) if you dont like the color.

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
Martha Stewart has some beautiful colors! Try her swatches and tape them to the wall. Don't know if you are a fan of muted colors but I think you may find one with her. How about a muted pastel green?

Yeah we were thinking green too. Someone said to go light light and we ended up with this awful bright green! So than we thought maybe a sage color green... but is that too dark?

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
It's tough I know. BM's swatches are so true to the actual color so that helped us. We stuck in the Benjamin Moore Historical colors so they all "flow" together. We used, Huntington Beige in our living/dining/hall, Georgian Green in the guest room, Phillipsburg Blue in "his" room, Chelsea Gray in our Bed room, Van Cortland Blue in the Great room & Lynchburg gray in the bath. You can see all them on BM's website.

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
We are going through this right now. I figured out the living room. We are going with dry sage BM. I had a hard time with the dining room. I also had to buy a quart last night because they are so limited on the samples. We decided on pottery red for the dining room. What makes it worse it we hired someone to do the painting. So I want to make sure I do it right. Oh and I think the hallway will be adobe biege.

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
I know the feeling, I have numbered squares of paint all over the walls in the kitchen and I still need to go out and get some more next week...I just can't decide on a color yet! Its such hard work!
And I just picked out tiles, that was hard work also!

See now the tiles were easy for me. I knew what colors i liked and we had to make a quick decision... so that was somewhat easy. Now the 500 various paint colors... No thanks!

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
What I usually do is look through magazines for looks that I like. You have a "cool" theme. White, black, gray, etc. If you want to warm up your home and go more eclectic you probably want to choose warmer colors-coffee, light browns, etc. If you like a more modern look you can play on the colors you already have go "cool" like grays, blues and greens. A good way to see the undertone of colors is to take a csingle paint chip and hold it up against a white piece of paper it should give you a warmer or cooler tone.

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
I think Red would be a nice accent color. Maybe the room should be a tan color and then the far wall with the windows red?
Tough call bc you want it go with the kitchen cabinets too...

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
I am thinking a blue or a yellow. Try light house in yellow.
I can never commit to color... so I always go with Benjamin Moore's off whites. YOu can pick up their booklet at most paint stores. Especially since you are not sure about color yet.

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
if you go on the home depot website they have this program where is matches and coordinates coors for you. You can even pick a room from a gallery and "paint" it with your colors.
This is how I picked colors for my entire house!!!

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
I loved Beige. Everything in our Apt. was Beige. When we moved into the hosue we painted our living room a DEEP red (one wall) And I was like "ohhh color" I loved it NOW I can't stop every room is a bright Vibrant color.
I painted the guest bedroom like Neon Green
My kitchen has White cabinets also. I actually painted the kitchen Yellow! At first I was like Im gonna need sunglasses but now I love it!!!!!
Don't mind the UGLY pink counter thats going soon (btw we said that would be the first to go YA well its the last!)

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
It's so hard to pick colors. Why not try something bright. I was never a fan of bright colors and typically go with beiges but my dad's new GF re-did his house in tons of color. I really like it.
dining room
converted garage recently done for Thanksgiving
bedroom colors
living room last christmas
another bedroom - painting was moved recently
downstairs bathroom
master bath and vanity area
kitchen

Re: i HATE picking paint colors
I LOVE to pick colors!!
That's why I am an Interior Designer!
There are a few magazines that tell you the exact paint color that is in the room. Traditional Home is a good resource. Look in the back after seeing a color you like. It is sometimes listed.
