I hope that what I JUST witnessed is "what would you do" by John Kinonis
I was JUST walking from Park and 56th to Park and 57th.
There was a couple on the corner. They were both attractive.
The girl was SCREAMING at her (I assume) BF "YOU BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF ME, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO....YOU BEAT ME."
I gave them a very wide berth and got out of there as fast as I could....all the time looking for cameras.
I HOPE and pray that it was set up.
The only reason I didnt get involved is that if this IS real I dont want to confront a guy who is beating a girl. I was truly affraid that he could threaten me.
I feel sick about this.

I have a really big mouth. I don't stand around if I see something I don't like.
If fists weren't flying, I would have stopped and screamed at him and called the cops.
ETA: Was she bruised or anything?

I would've bolted too, especially not having actually witnessed the incident but just the screaming. Did anyone else get involved?
I remember when I was working retail (it was a store in a strip mall) and one of us having to call the police because this guy just starting beating his wife in the car, with their son in the backseat.

Geez. I hope it was, too.
Personally, I wouldn't have said anything to them either but taken out my cell phone and called the cops to report a domestic disturbance.
ETA: This show amazes me! It's brilliant!

Could it have been a WWYD from that show?
I don't know but I would have done the same. Obviously he wasn't beating her right there was he?

Ugh. I hope that it was just something for a news segment.
If it's not...then I hope someone calls the authorities.

All is was was her screaming at him on the corner.
No fists, no nothing. Just her screaming.
I'm tempted to go back out. If they are still on the corner then we KNOW its TV.
I am someone who would get involved.....but when you are talking about a man who is being yelled at because he is abusing a woman.....I just have to be affriad thay he COULD come at me.
Like I said I'm sick over this.....I REALLY hope it was a WWYD.

If it was me, I probably would have stuck around just to make sure she was OK....Or if you were afraid why didn't you call the cops. Honestly, I think its a shame that you did NOTHING

I agree. Even if you walked away and called the cops, its better than nothing. What happened to the Good Samaritan law? Why feel bad after the fact if you could have done something to help?

I don't think the show is having a great impact if people witness troubling scenarios and do nothing but hope its just a TV show...
I would have at least asked her if she was ok.

jmo, and i put off answering because i wanted to think about it for a bit...
ive never known anyone personally that was physically abused (that i know of anyway)... idk about anyone else but last thing i would expect an abused person to do is to stand out in a public place and out her abuser that way... it sounds to me like they were looking to cause a scene...

I think I would probably have made a phone call to the police to say there is a domestic disturbance going on.
But I definitely wouldn't have said anything to them directly....I've seen how bad that can wind up when someone tries to be a good samaritan. Usually the do-gooder winds up with a black eye.

thats not to say that my initial reaction wouldnt have been to stay and make sure that they didnt do anything... this is just an after the fact thought that it seems strange now thinking about the way it happened
ETA: i mean it did strike me as a little odd reading this at first... but its different seeing it happen im sure...

I would have at least asked her if she was ok.
But that's the whole point of the show. It's to show how people will turn a blind eye to someone in need or ignore a crime being committed right under their nose. It's a shame actually. I remember one poster posting about how someone grabbed her and NOBODY came to help her as she ran screaming "HELP!" down the block. It's so sad that we have to trick people into helping us by screaming FIRE or something like that.

Exactly, and my sidenote to all of this is people have lost so much compassion and empathy for others that we are all so quick to turn a blind eye. Very troubling and disheartening.

I know and I get that. It is a shame. But I think the show is making it WORSE if now people who *may* have helped don't because they think its just a TV stunt.

Yes, I lived it first-hand, and I think THAT was the most traumatizing part of the entire incident for me.... realizing no one was going to come to my aid, fearing that he would realize that too, and come back to grab me
I don't know that the show serves any purpose really, other than to demonstrate the variety in responses. I know for myself, that if I were ever confronted with anyone in a precarious situation, whether it posed a harm to me or not, I would do whatever I could. I can't fathom ever being responsible in any small way for anyone experiencing the kind of terror I experienced.

I would think it would have the opposite affect. No one wants to look bad on TV.

It is sad.. but I can't blame the OP. I have never witnessed it, and I can imagine someone being scared to get involved. Unfortunately, we live in a society where people have to think twice to help someone, because you never know if would make it out of it in one piece.

I agree. I would have stuck around to ask if she was OK too. What if you see on the news tonight that someone was killed or kidnapped or something where they were?
And IMO, (and flame me if you want) I think it is totally disgusting and appalling that you raced to sign onto LIF and post this. In the least, call 911 to report it!

You're right. It's easy to say you should've, I would have.. and this situation was a little different than someone running down the street screaming help.
