I just feel that baby nail clippers....
are the enemy. I really hate cutting DS nails. It is impossible- he moves so much and closes his hand. When I try while he is sleeping he wakes up. Today I cut the skin by nail b.c he moved and I made him bleed- how horrible!!! Just needed to vent! If anyone has any secrets how to do this let me know!!!

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I wait until the nail begins peeling off then I bite it!!! I'm scared of the nail clipper. My DS doesn't really scratch his face though...I don't know how though...he's always squeezing and scratching, but never breaks the skin.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I used the clippers once - she jerked her hand and I cut her little finger I cried more than she did. Now I just use the nail file although she doesn't really cooperate with that either!

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I used a nail file for a long time, until he had the sense to keep his hand still anyway. It worked just fine, their nails are so paper thin, it doesn't take much.
I used to sing Where is Thumbkin when I filed his nails also, for some reason, it worked! Though maybe any song would have worked, he liked hearing it and kept sort of still.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I know it's gross, but I used to bite DS's nails when he was a baby. Either that or I would make DH do it.

Nail scissor!!!! I used the clipper once the day we brought DD#1 home and I cut her fingertip SO bad. I cried so bad and tossed the clippers. The scissor is WAY easier.

Just going to recommend nails scissors. I still use them at 2 yrs old. The ones I have I think came in a baby grooming kit of some sort so that are rounded and not pointed like these are at the end.

When they get a little older, flip the TV & do it while they're mesmerized.
If I could get her thumb out of her mouth while she watches TV, it should work for anyone.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I use a metal nail file, I'm too scared to use clippers. I use the metal one bc it's thinner and so I don't file his nail and his finger (which is what happens with the thicker nail files). I file his nails when he's awake sitting in his bouncy or in the swing (not swinging though).

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
No secrets. DD will be 5 months and I still only file her nails. I do it on the changing table, b/c she's always happy up there. I tried the clippers on her fingers once and got some skin so I stick with the file (clippers for toes, though)

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I try to cut them while he's sleeping otherwise it's a battle and I have cut him and made him bleed, too. Try the rounded nail scissors, they work very good.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
i use a nail file.
I just started busting out the clippers at 12 months old.
When she was little-- I would let her fall asleep on me, then file.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
i started with the infant file when he was a newborn... when they are longer i break out the nail scissor- although mine is not all pointy like the one pictures above which i think is an adult nail scissor? - the infant nail scissor you can get in the grooming kit over at buy buy baby. like sjm said its sort of rounded- to avoid cutting the skin accidentally
eta- i do it while he's sleeping

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I was soooo scared to cut Maya's nails. A neighbor recommended using scissors, and I found baby nail scissors. They are not sharp at all, and are curved, and so easy! I never cut her once and I cut her nails all the time now! I tried filing, the scissors are actually easier!

I've done this! The "safety" ones I had were HORRIBLE, I went out a bought new ones. I usually do it when DH is feeding him, seems to work.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
I had gotten pretty good with the clippers until I nicked one of them on the thumb I was more hysterical than her. Their nails grow soooo damn fast! The file just does not do the job.

Re: I just feel that baby nail clippers....
i hate cutting DD's nails too. I usually forget until she is scratching me in the face every 2 minutes and then it is a struggle to get them done. I also nipped her skin with the clippers when she was 3 months old and I cried more than she did and now I really hate it because of that.
