i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

Chat Icon it not that big of a deal but to me its a little scary. i kept getting heart palputations and fluttering so i had to have an echocardiogram and that was the outcome.

when u have this it really does not affect u except if u r pregnant. as soon as i go into labor i have to rush to the hospital to go on an antibodic immediately to prevent infection - i guess its kind of like those that fail the Strep B test.

just one more thing to worry about...

thanks for listening to me vent...Chat Icon

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

I was diagnosed with it early in my pregnancy. It's been better since - everyone reassures me that its nothing to worry about.

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

I've had this since before pregnancy - it's no biggie. Sounds worse than it is. You have more of a chance of something happening at the dentist than during labor. In fact, when I had a miscarriage and had to get a d&c - they didn't even make me take the amoxicillin beforehand - they said it's really just in the mouth that something can happen.Chat Icon

no I don't remember anyone telling me anything about that. Maybe I'll ask my OB when I go for my appt on Monday to just make sure.

I only knew about the dentist.

Try not to worry too much. It is actually pretty common and not life-threatening and it is good you know you know about it.

Hang in there !

I could have written this myself. I also was diagnosed with an MVP at around 10 yrs of age. It really isnt a big deal and yes the dentist is the most problematic. Honestly, it totally did not effect me at all my whole pregnancy but it does effect me in the winter when its cold out...kinda throbbing pains. Alot of people go undiagnosed with it. Dont let it scare you. Chat Icon

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

I've read a little bit about it. I have even spoken to some doctors who say that the antibiotics are as a precaution for something that isn't really likely to happen anyway.

I have a mild tricuspid valve regurgitation that I have known about for a few years. It was found as a fluke thing.

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

I have mvp and have had it for years//
last two pregnancies bad flutters, anxiety and panic attacks--this time not bad.
I have to take antibiotics before every surgical procedure or anything that can cause bleeding.
They even made me take them before retrieval for IVF>
I guess every doc is diff.
Its common, it sounds scary but the dentist is usually the biggest issue--and caffiene enhances the symptoms--

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

It is not too bad to have MVP, actually it is quite common.

I have had MVP for several years now. They will load you up with antibiotics and will most likely keep you on a heart doppler to make sure there is no backflow of blood during labor if your MVP warrants it. There are many stages of MVP & it is very common. I think almost 50% of all women have it in some form. Only 15 - 20% of all women who have it are considered "high-risk."

If you need a good cardiologist please FM me and I will give you my dr's info.

Don't worry it is pretty common all the women on my mothers side (mom, aunt, cousins) have this but for some reason they haven't found one in me yet (they didn't find my grandmothers until she got a pacemakerin her 80s). It is really not a big deal. You take some antibiotics when you go to the dentist etc. I wouldn't worry about it. There are a lot of much worse things you could end up withChat Icon

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

It's OK.. I know it's scary, but my friend has it as well and she is fine. Only thing she has to owrry about is taking anti biotics before the dentist or medical procedures. Which will be birth as well when she ever does have a baby.

Re: i just found out i have Mitral Valve Prolapse

I have MVP as well I was diagnosed around 2nd grade and was on medication for the pains for a while. I had antibiotics when I delivered my son but I have to be medicated even for dental work. there are 2 different types of mvp regurgitating and non regurgitating one needs medicine the other doesnt you might wanna ask about that. they put the medicine in your iv you never even know its not a big deal. my mom has it also and they diagnosed my son with it when he was 3 months I have to have him go back to a heart doctor to confirm it now that hes almost 3 but it is quite common hope this gives you a little comfort Chat Icon

I have an MVP too, but non-regurgitating.

I have MVP. MY doctor said I will need antibiotics during labor. I have also read that MVP tends to go away during pregnancy.
