OBSESSED with Outlander!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

This book had been recommended to me several times, but I never read it thinking it was going to be a super-cheesy romance novel...something I'd be embarrassed to admit I read, like err...ummm...Fifty Shades Chat Icon Chat Icon

But I got the first three in the series for Christmas and just read the first in seven days...700 pages! O.M.G! nothing like that! I cannot wait to go on, but I'm stuck reading the 4th Harry Potter--I was forced my my DH and DD, they're obsessed with that.

For those who have read the series...are they all as good?

Running off now to subscribe to Starz...Chat Icon

I won't lie, I was skeptical, too. I mean, my mom read this stuff in the 90s! But, damn it's good. I'm actually on the last published book now, Written in My Own Heart's Blood. Some of the books are amazing, there are others that seemed to drag to me. I think it's just because Diana Gabaldon loves her characters SOOOO much that she wants us to watch them do EVERYTHING- like brush their hair, tend the garden, or clean the privy. She seemed to have a little directionless slump in the middle of the series where there were hundreds of pages dedicated to the mundane and then the last fifty pages were PACKED with action. But, the last two books were back to what pulled me in in the first place. Even if they feel a little slow to you, keep going, the story is worth it!

And same goes for Harry Potter! I've re-read those books dozens of times! Chat Icon

ETA: And thank God these books were nothing like 50 Shades! I read it and hated it!

I have a love/hate relationship with this series. I plowed through the first book--even though I wasn't thrilled with the end. Partway through the second I almost put it down but was ultimately glad I didn't. Third book I raced through. Fourth book I put down at about pg 150 and haven't picked it up again in 6 months.

The books are too long and with too much description and the pace often suffers. I've also grown to hate some characters over time, and that's turned me off from reading more. Would I eventually like to finish it? Yes. Eventually...

This is why I HAD to keep going and not stop. If I picked up any other book, I know I never would've gone back. It was worth it but you are 100% right. She really needs a lesson in pacing. I mean some of these books could have even been two books, the first and second halves were so different!

I've been told about them for a while and decided this summer to read them...First day of my vacation I started them... and finished all of books in the week and a half I had off. Chat Icon

There were absolute times where some of the books seemed to drag and had so much description ... but in the long run - I loved them! wondering how long I'm going to have to wait for the next one to come out!

All right, you've convinced me. I've had this first book FOREVER and never read it. I'll give it a try next week... (book club? Chat Icon )

And stop blaming those two for making you read Harry Potter, or I'm telling! Chat Icon Chat Icon
