and it was a 23 month old that died in Texas. This is making me so paranoid to leave my damn house.

I know isn't it terrible.
With all of these killer illnesses you cannot take your DC being sick lightly. So scary.

Re: I just heard on the news that the first death from Swine Flu happened.
Yeah, it sucks..i work in the medical field and am getting bombarded with Swine Questions and CDC updates... It seems to affect children and elderly a little bit worse, which is to be expected due to the immune system response..
I just hope that this goes away soon but i doubt it due to the fact we had a outbreak in NYC...

Re: I just heard on the news that the first death from Swine Flu happened.
Ugh this is so sad and scary! I know it's not much different than the "normal" flu, but still. We are traveling Friday so I'm worried about the airport, etc.

I'm worried that people are going to be in severe panic mode over this. Yes, it's horrible, but roughly 36,000 people in the US alone die from the "normal" flu, or complications from the flu, and 200,000 people in the US are hospitalized. However, since the media isn't scaring everyone, we just deal with it every year.....

totally agree!!
It must be a slow news cycle, but I feel like this coverage is out of control.

I agree. Was at the pediatrician on Monday. She put my mind at ease. She explained that its the same as the reg flu. The media is putting scare tactics.

...which is typically publicized to an extent as well.
When there is a new strain of ANYTHING, it tends to be big news. It doesn't mean anyone shouldn't worry. My son had a horrible virus and couldn't walk for days, so I feel justified in being worried about this. I'm glad that others aren't worried though.

I do think it's important to add though that for the sake of this virus, it seems noteworthy to mention it's someone from Mexico b/c the reports stated the child was possinly misdiagnosed and they don't know how long the child went without medical care. That's why they went to texas.
Either way, this is very scary.

I think that it is very sad that the child died. Anytime a child passes for any reason it is heartbreaking. I just felt it was an important fact that was being under reported. The news media creates a mass hysteria in the general public at times and leaving out crucial parts of the story like this is part of how they wind up creating this panic.

I didn't read the article, so based on what the above posted stated..that the child travelled TO Mexico, I figured the child wasn't FROM Mexico. I agree it's different if the child was FROM Mexico and travelled TO Texas.

There are many strains of the regular flu. The flu being reported is interesting and newsworthy because it is typically only caught from direct contact with pigs. This new strain is contagious from human to human contact.
The case in Nassau they are reporting is a student at St. Francis prep.

I read that student is friends with students at SFP, not that the student goes to Prep. We will see what news comes out today.

That makes more sense to me. DH and I were trying to figure out last night when we watched the news why a kid from LI was going all the way to St Francis for school.

I agree too, and I can't stand when the media stirs the pot and people freak. At this point, I think people can still do all their normal activities with DC, just make sure hands are washed a little more frequently.
The toddler's death is very sad, but as Goldenrod pointed out, so many people die from the flu each year, and that goes unrecognized.
