Re: I just heard on the news that the first death from Swine Flu happened.
oh no I am so paranoid, I make DH wash his hands, his face, change all his clothes before touching DD... we both work in Manhattan. I am also planning to cancel the trip into my office with DD.

I just wanted to add a fact that many news agencies are not adding. This child traveled to Mexico.
Source
The child still DIED though regardless of where he got it from.
I do think it's important to add though that for the sake of this virus, it seems noteworthy to mention it's someone from Mexico b/c the reports stated the child was possinly misdiagnosed and they don't know how long the child went without medical care. That's why they went to texas.
Either way, this is very scary.
I didn't read the article, so based on what the above posted stated..that the child travelled TO Mexico, I figured the child wasn't FROM Mexico. I agree it's different if the child was FROM Mexico and travelled TO Texas.
The article I read said the child was FROM Mexico, and travelled TO Texas to seek medical treatment. Because the child died here in the US they are counting it as a US death, although IMHO that is just throwing gasoline on the fire. Really, the child is from Mexico, and it seems to me would have died in Mexico if his family hadn't brought him to the US.

On Wedenesday mornings, there is a library class in Fresh Meadows that I take ds too.... not today. St. Francis Prep is two blocks away. Just worry a student who was sick used the library.

Re: I just heard on the news that the first death from Swine Flu happened.
Honestly, like an earlier poster said, there are tons of hospitalizations and even deaths from the regular flu every single winter. Yet we leave the house, we take our kids to playgroups and public places, we do our holiday shopping, go to lots of parties and gatherings, etc. And even though a semi-effective flu vaccine exists, every year there are tons of posts about how people aren't taking it, their DC aren't getting it, they're going to take their chances. To me it seems paranoid to lock yourself up at home over a new strain of flu.

I just heard it too and am so nervous, wanted to go to the mall to get a gift for someone and now I'm terrified to go out to crowded places with the baby!!! OMG I know, I don't really panic easily, but I went to Queens mall on Mon just when this whole thing was getting really bad and now I am watching DD like a hawk. She was really congested this morning and I was freaking out But thank god I cleaned her nose and she is fine. I think it's very hard not to be worried and little scared in this situation, even if you try your best not to.

I completely agree.
The fact is that 36,000 people a year die from the traditional strain of flu, mostly the elderly and young, and yet we've never seen the same kind of panic or anxiety related to it. With this strain, there has been ONE death in the US, and that child was from Mexico. In my humble opinion, I would be more fearful of the flu that's been passing around for years, than this strain, and I simply refuse to feed into the mass hysteria and panic, and honestly think it's very unhealthy to do so. Taking ordinary precautions like washing your hands frequently, yes, but locking yourself and your children down in your home, no.
I was raised in that kind of environment of anxiety and overprotectiveness, and I can say that, for a long time, mostly before I met DH, it made me into such a cautious, hesitant, anxious, overly paranoid person who couldn't fully enjoy life. I love and admire my parents for wanting to protect me, but I won't continue that legacy.

20,000 people die of the flu each year. Children are elderly are often most at risk.
