I know crib bumpers are a no, no, but I am considering one at this point

Because DS's feet/ legs keep getting stuck in between the crib rails , I have a breatheble bumper in his crib but it's not doing anything. I just put him for a nap and heard him screaming, ran in and saw his whole leg up to his thigh was out and twisted in a way that it was hard to get it out. He seems fine now, but it was scary, this is the 3rd time it happened since he started sleeping in his crib at 4 mo , but this was the worst.
I don't know what I can do. Any advice? Anyone else's DC has done this?
Oh DS is 6 mo.

I actually put a regular bumper in dd's crib at like 7-8 months... I used it as a binkie blocker and simply bc the crib felt so cold without anything but a sheet all the way down on the lowest level... No more hitting her head against the bars too! She actually likes to sleep diagonal with her head in the corner of the bumper and I'm happy it's against a soft surface.

The only way I could see myself removing it would be when she is taller and starts using the bumper to prop herself up and out of the crib. Right now, she just stans on the mattress

DS is a wild sleeper and would wake up at least 3-4 times a night bc he would bump his head on the rails. I put his bumpers in and that's the only way he STTN. This was when he was about 6 months old.
That's the youngest I would personally put them in a crib, by then they have good neck control and can roll over if needed.

My DS is 2.5 and has had a bumper in his crib from day 1. Never had any issues. I would go for it!

One of the main reason we din't have a regular bumper -other than the fact that they are not recommended- is because we had regular bumpers when DD was a baby, one day when she was about 9 months half of her body and her head somehow gut stuck in between the crib and and a bumper , don't ask me how she managed , because I have no idea (the bumper was in there secured , tucked in between the mattress and the crib ) so anyway, thank god we found her before she seriously got hurt or suffocated , I removed the bumper that day and never used it. But now with DS having this issue, I don't know what to do. I am so paranoid and terrified of the same thing happening to him, but I'm also scared that one day he will break his foot or somehow hit his head on the rails really hard ...

The babies get their legs stuck occasionally but really isn't a minor irritation compared to the risks of SIDS/suffocation, so for us... we choose not to use bumpers. We never did with our 1st either.

My DD just turned 2 and I have had bumpers on her crib since day 1 and never had a problem. I would put them in and see if it helps.

We used breathable bumpers when DS was 3 mod and started to sleep in his crib. He was also swaddled like a burrito and couldnt move. Around 7 mos we stopped swaddling and shortly after he was all over the place. Thats when I put in his regular bumpers.

I used Wonder Bumpers with DS. Back then they weren't available in stores but now you can buy them at Buy Buy Baby. Absolutely loved them. They were worth every penny. We paid about $160 back then, not sure how much they are now.

I used them for my first until he started using them to climb out of the crib -
for my second, I used them for about 2 months and then DH had an epiphany and read and article that said not to use them so out them came (as if I hadn't read all of that stuff prior to having the first baby)

Both of my boys lifted their heads very very early, and were "GASP" belly sleepers from the time they could roll over ......they were fine w/ the bumpers

I personally think it's more about YOUR comfort level w/ the idea of them in there

Please consider a breathable bumber.

I lost my nephew to SIDS at 10 weeks. Most heartbreaking thing my family has ever gone through. I'm not saying bumbers cause SIDS, but just because others have not had a problem in the past doesn't mean that something won't happen in the future.

I don't want anyone else to feel the pain I see my sister in every day. If there are precautions to take, and not having anything in the crib in one of them, then take them.

I switched from breathable bumpers to real bumpers at around 8-9 months bc DD was smacking her head against the crib slats (breathable bumpers arent cushiony, on purpose). She kept hitting her head & I figured by 8-9 months DD was old/mobile enough to handle regular bumpers

ETA she is now 10.5 months & no probs

My kids coslept or were in a bassinet until 6-7 months and when they transitioned to crib, they slept with the bumpers. I had a panic moment with my DS at 7 months because he rolled all over and took them out but then he wouldnt sleep so they went back in. He liked the coziness they provide. The top of his head was always touching them.

I also only used bumpers that stood up against the rails. They are the flat ones, not the big pillowy ones.

We do breathable bumpers and love them. We had to do something because they were always getting legs or arms stuck to the point they would be bruised around the thigh. It was so scary. You have to do what is best for your child. As for SIDS, well anything can cause it so while it's something to consider I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket either. Having your child stuck in their crib is a huge issue.

Can you tuck the bottom of the breathable bumper down into the mattress? DD's are tucked in in the front bc the crib is lower there. Maybe that would help if he's pushing his legs under the bumper.

I had the breathable ones but just switched to regular, DS is 7 months, he has been hitting his head on them since he rolls a lot, so far he is sleeping a lot better and not waking himself up at 330 am as he was previously when he hit his head
