I must be made out of gold - ipad

Let's say that DS' playroom is filled with any toys you can imagine. The therapists want fine motor toys, I have. Gross motor skills, I have. You want puzzles, we have LOTS of them. You want craft, paper, glue, glitter glue, color wonder, makers, playdoh. You want a toy, we most likely have it.

One of DS' therapists mentioned the ipad.

This is where I draw the line. I know I am behind on printing pics for his pecs and object ID but the ipad.... seriously!!!!!!

DS is 3.5 yo. I can't imagine buying a $500+ piece of electronic to look at pics and his age when being careful is not in his vocabulary at his age. I mean he would think nothing of making sure the ipad does not fall.

I mean... I could buy a cheap notebook for cheaper than the ipad.

I can't imagine someone would think I am OK with that.

I am all for technology but come on!!!!!

Re: I must be made out of gold - ipad

Funny you posted this. Today after OT, DS came out with his therapist and she brought her iPad with her. She downloaded some type of art program over the weekend for her nieces and thought DS would enjoy it (he colored in a dinosaur). She gave me the name of the app to download on our iPad.

I see kids all the time playing with their parents iPad or other electronic games in the waiting room at therapy. I can't see buying something like that for DS either...I feel he is too young and would be afraid it would break.

I can see the helpfulness of it. I cant see spending the money on it at this age. As you said he is 3.5 years old.

Re: I must be made out of gold - ipad

we got DS at 2 years old the iPod touch... the BEST thing ever... for his 4th birthday we do plan on getting him the iPad (hes 3.5 now)

it is an AMAZING tool. it has helped my DS TREMENDOUSLY and i do recommend it.

we havent forgotten about the toys or puzzles or board games, but the iPod has done wonders for DSs speech, counting, shape recognition.

ask my DS what word begins with the letter V, and he will tell you Volture. most kids would answer violin.

they are expensive, but you can write it off at tax time, and it is a fabulous tool.

How about an Itouch? We got one for Cole when he turned 4. We didn't do PECS, but there are a bunch of really great aps for kids on the spectrum. He still uses several of them.

I use one on my sessions but I would never have the nerve to ask a parent to buy one!

I recently had a play date with a little boy in my son's class. His Mom and I were talking about the pecs board and she pulled out an ipad and showed me an app she bought that he can create sentences on. She send it with him to school everyday and he is really good at. He also has games that he likes on it. We plan on getting DS one as well and I too am worried that he will be too rough with it.

I do think it was a little out of line for the therapist to recommend it. I would feel the same way you do if school sent him a note suggesting it.

We have a touch already. What are the name of some apps you all have? I will look into them.

DS likes to play games on the ipod (my DHs).

Honestly, I never even thought to buy one for DS.
An ipad, im thinking maybe not, but, ipod or itouch..hmmmm maybe something to consider.

that's crazy that they mentioned that. i am however getting my boys the ipod touch bc of the great apps i heard about. my older one is having a hard time with id'ing some numbers and the million and one games, dvd's, puzzles, workbooks i have haven't helped. so i'm hoping this might. but it's mainly for the little guy. i'll let u know how it goes, i've seen them at around $200 for a 8gb.

i'd also love to hear about some good apps.

I'm not sure I would spend that much money either...unless we said we'd buy it for us and let DS use it occasionally. Still, that is a lot of money.

When DH got his i-phone DS inherited his old i-pod touch which is fantastic. I agree with the other ladies that it is a much more "reasonable" way to go although still expensive. But DS loves it!
