I need help- what to send to someone in the hospital- cannot be flowers

I"m having such a hard time here! One of DH's good friend's Dad is in the hospital getting chemo and other treatments for Leukemia. I want to send something, but he is not allowed to have flowers.

I thought about sending an edible arrangment- but if it doesn't get eaten that day, it has to go in the fridge, and I don't think he has access to one!

I'm at a loss here! Help!

ETA: It has to be something that can be delivered by a delivery person, etc.

Thanks- but we can't go visit (its out of state)- and I don't know of any companies that do that. It has to be hand delivered by the company- can't even be mailed!

Can you send it to his family to bring to him in the hospital? What state? There are gift basket companies that do deliveries.

Don't get him fruit- if he's under neutropenic precautions, he can't have that, either Chat Icon

I wouldn't get food at all.

My friend's 10 year old wasn't allowed to have any pre-cut food while he was undergoing chemo. If he wanted a watermelon, his mom went out & bought an entire watermelon & cut it up for him to have.

My nephew's friend used to get clothes from this website:
http://www.gotcancer.org/store/. He has to have a certain sense of humor for that. It's definitely not for everyone.

Best thing I can think of are things to pass the time. When DH's friend was in the hospital for chemo, he would burn CDs of their favorite comedians.

iTunes gift certificate, barnes & noble/Borders gift certificate...

Ugh. I just realized how many people I know/knew with cancer.Chat Icon

Thanks for your help- maybe I'll try to send a B&N GC to the son and have him pick up a book, magazine, etc for his dad.

I was going to say crossword books to. Maybe some of those hand held games based on interest, they have them for everything from casino games to fishing games. Good luck and my prayers are w/your friend and your friends father.

Don't send food either. The person's immune system is not strong and you don't want them to get a virus.

What about a gift from a place like Red Envelope - they might deliver via Fed EX or UPS.

I just went through this with a family member. You are limited because of the person's compromised immune system. Flowers can contain mold spores that can make them sick. In our case, there was a very long list of foods that could not be consumed (particularly fresh foods). If you want to send something edible, I would recommend sending packaged things, like packaged cookies or snacks.

Books and DVDs are nice, if you have a way of getting them there. Honestly, receiving a thoughtful card really was a nice enough gift. It let the person know that other people were thinking of him and he could display them in the room during his stay.
