I NEED to get her to gain weight by next week
So we've been dealing with terrible reflux with Erin. The ped sent me to a GI doc to try to help with the reflux. She spits up so much that she isn't gaining enough weight. She will be 3 months this weekend and she only weighs 8lb 6oz.
We've changed her formula several times, tried adding cereal and now have her on Enfamil AR. She is also getting several meds to try to help it. Since changing her formula last week, she really started eating more and I thought she was spitting up less. Well we went to the GI doc today and she gained NOTHING!!! I couldn't believe it!!! I even made them weigh her again because I just thought it couldn't be right. So now the doc says that if she doesn't make an improvement by next week that he will admit her to the hospital for a feeding tube.
God, please help my little baby keep her food down this week. I really don't want her on a feeding tube.

They test her stool every week for milk protein allergy. She also had a full blood workup. I don't know if there is any way to look for allergy other than checking the stool for blood. How did they test your son?

that test is not always reliable.Honestly i would ask for a scrip for nutaramigen or alimentum or ask your Dr for a couple of sample cans. You can take her for scratch testing but not many Drs will do it that early-you could call though. he did have blood in his stool but he needed to be on amino acid formula-maybe she just has a sensitivity not an allergy...
He has recently been getting hives if one of us has even TOUCHED dairy-my SIL had a few sips of coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 and kissed him and he broke out. A "poor mans" test you can do is to take a drop of her formula put it on her upper back and cover with a band aid. Check it in about 1/2 hour. If there is a reaction she probably has some issue. Good luck

She was on Nutramigen for 3 weeks and it didn't help at all. The doc said that since it wasn't helping there was no reason to keep her on it.
I'm going to try the "poor mans" test when she wakes up. Thanks.
ETA: I also have an appt for her at Schneider Children's Hospital for tomorrow. I'm hoping they will think of something the current GI doc hasn't already.

Not sure, but they did an upper GI series. Would it show on that?

Re: I NEED to get her to gain weight by next week
Have you tried feeding cereal? My DD has reflux and we were told to give her like 1 tsp of cereal before a bottle. Just give the stomach something a little heavy to help with gravity.
We also use enfamil AR and thicken it even more with oatmeal. It almost looks like a thick milkshake, but she keeps it down. I would try smaller oz bottles at first so you don't waste anything.
Good luck = I had the same concerns with my daughter and it worked out in the end.

We tried adding cereal to each bottle. I'm not really sure if it helped or not. I just know that we had a really hard time with it. I would add the same amount to each bottle and 1 feeding she did well, then another time she'd have trouble getting it out of the nipple, then another time she'd be drowning in it and having to gulp every sip which caused even more spitting up. it just wasn't fair to any of us.
I tried adding cereal to the AR but it looked like it all separated out. Is there a trick to keeping it in solution? We've always used oatmeal because she tended to get constipated and we didn't want to make it worse.
