I never want to work in a public school. Please respect that.
Why is it that people cannot understand that I do not ever want to work in a public school? I don't work in a private school because "I couldn't get a job in a public school". I wish people would stop making that sweeping generalization. Ontop of that, private schools and parochial schools are two different things. People automatically think I work in a Catholic school when I say I work in an independent private school. Not that there is anything wrong with working in a Catholic school, but those comments are inevitably followed by, "Wow, the money must really s-ck," or, "Don't worry, it will help you get a job in a public school." A) You have NO idea how much money I make, and you'd kick yourself in the pants for how wrong you are if I told you and B) I have no desire to work for a public school. I, personally, feel I can do my job as a teacher much more effectively in a place where I am free to teach my subject in a way that is conducive to learning. We don't worry about state tests, but that doesn't invalidate what we do. We constantly must be evaluate and re-evaluated by an accredidation board. Ugh! Just needed to vent that, as I have had too many ignorant run-ins lately (not on here, of course!).

I work at an independent school also and I totally understand where you are coming from. My job is far from perfect but I love being at a private school. I can actually say that bad G word without getting in trouble.

AMEN!! I would get this alllll the time. In fact, now that I'm a SAHM, everyone assumes that when I go back I'll be heading directly to public school....ughghghgh! I'm pretty sure that if we can afford for me to stay home, we can survive on a measly Catholic school teacher's salary!

Rachel...I feel for you. I've taught in a Catholic school my whole career (the last 6 years---was in a different field prior) & I love it. I love how I have the freedom to teach however I want in my classroom; I'm not bound to hours of paperwork and my class is small & the teachers/school is friendly. The pay here isn't what public school is, but I have so many other benefits.
My SIL worked in an independent school & absolutely loved it.

Don't listen to what anyone else has to say. You're happy where you are and that's what matters. My aunt has been teaching in the Catholic school system for 26 or 27 years. Her faith is very strong, she went to Catholic schools her whole life, and that's where she wants to be. If you are teaching where you want to be teaching, that's all that counts!

I get similar attitudes- I work in the South Bronx, I have for ten years and I love teaching in the city. People don't realize how insulting it is when they make comments like that.

Is it tougher to get a job in an independent school? I look but never find openings that are advertised to the public. Where should I look?

Re: I never want to work in a public school. Please respect that.
I go through the same thing.
I work in a non-public state funded psychiatric day treatment center. The pay is not horrible - I supported myself before DH came along. Most of my friends in the public sector who do comparable jobs have more headaches dealing with administration and parents than I care to deal with.
IF (and that is a big IF) I were to seek employment in a public school, at this stage of my career, I would be in a very vulnerable position. Last one hired, first one fired. That is not a chance I am willing to take especially since we will more than likely have two children back to back because of my age.

I do think it's tougher to find a job in an independent school because the teachers are usually so happy there that they don't leave the school. If you want to find openings, you can check NYSAIS.ORG . It has all the schools in New York and their job openings. You'll notice that there's hardly any openings, and if there are, they're mainly in the same schools, which isn't a good sign. My advice is to look at the websites of any schools you are interested in working at, see if you agree with their mission statement (because that will give you an idea of what that particular school values) and then send your resume in even if they're not hiring. That's what I did, and I was extremely fortunate to find an amazing school that fits with my ideals of education.
