I really hate the people we bought our place from...
So, 3 years later-- we still get mail for them. Even after a year of living here, we were still getting their credit card bills, their CORD BLOOD bills, among other things that looked important. We nicely fwded everything to their new address for a VERY long time with no thank you's. Now, we just throw it out because if they are too stupid or lazy to change it-- so be it.
When we moved in, we never changed the locks because the locks on the building changed, so who needed the extra expense and hassle when they didn't have the keys to even get in.
We only have three of our deadbolt keys-- one for me, and one for DH. We have one extra one somewhere.
So today, I go to make 6 extra sets of our keys-- to give to all our family members in prep for when the baby comes, so anyone can get into our apt or whatever... The locksmith tells me we are legally NOT ALLOWED to make copies of our own keys to the apartment we OWN without a card that came with our deadbolt.
No one ever gave us anything and the only way to get keys is if we take out the lock and bring it to the locksmith and they "re-key" it, for $25, plus making all new sets of keys. Or of course changing the lock altogether.
Who f*cking needs this on my list of things to do right now???

haha let me guess..you live in some sort of building/development run by a management company? The reason I ask is we live in a townhouse in suffolk in a gated community....we LOVE it....my one gripe is all the extra fee's....i lost garage door opener....$25.......we have maintenance who comes to fix ANYTHING...everytime they come its something they don't do..so its $$ which is BS because I know i am just tipping the guy...he's not paying it to the company!......lost a mail key and asked to have copy made from DH's....well you would have thought I was stealing people's mail LOl the girl said.....that would be mail fraud(are u kidding me???)...i said its my key that I already had I jsut need a new one.of course...$15!!! LOL....they don'tt get the wrath of a pregnant lady on holiday hormones!

that's annoying. I would try another locksmith. I have had keys that say do not duplicate and depending on the locksmith, I've gotten it done!

Yes, it's a condo-- they are all run by a management company. I was actually thinking of calling them because as I came back in-- everyone has the same Medeco locks on their doors, so I wonder if the management company might have the card. Although it's probably easier to just take the lock out and handle it myself.
I tried telling the locksmith that I was due in a few weeks and I was just trying to make sets of keys for my family members-- but that didn't work. He said he couldn't even make the keys without the cards-- legal issue or not. Do keys really need to be THAT secure???

Can you go to like a home depot? They have never questioned me on duplicating keys.

I guess I can try that-- but, I have a feeling I am going to get the same response.
They are special keys that need some kind of code to actually make the keys-- plus you need the card to show I guess proof of ownership. At least that's how I understood it. Why they would put these kinds of locks in an apt building in a transitional neighborhood (everyone moves to the burbs a little after they have kids), I have NO idea. Makes no sense.
I need to make an HD run anyway-- so, maybe I will try them before I take the lock out. The $25 fee is def cheaper than buying a new lock anyway. It's just really more that it is SO annoying.

I actually own that type of lock...you need the card so random pple can not make copies of ur keys if g-d forbid u lost ur key..it is a safety precaution..normally when u move into a new apartment u should get new locks to begin with...its alot safer then the old owner having copies of ur keys and they obviously still have that card to copy keys.

about the mail....
we had the SAME problem... in the begining we just put the new address to foward it.. now we just put return to sender---- at least some of the people have stopped sending it to our house then...
