I really want a turkey sandwich...UPDATED LOL
who would have thought a little post about a turkey sandwich would get so many responses.....anyway DH made me a Chicken Cutlet panini! I got my fix!
but we can't have it right? I really am craving one and I think it would really help me feel better and not feel so sick.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
As long as the deli is reputable, why not? I'm more on the side of "everything in moderation". If you're really concerned, ask them to heat it up - that should kill anything roaming around.

So have it! I always ate cold cuts. Just make sure that it's from a reputable place.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
Posts like this drive me absolutely insane. Eat what you want in moderation unless your doctor specifically says not to. My doctor told me very few items were off limits such as Tuna more than once per week, Sushi is a definite no no and alcohol.

I get them. My doctor says it fine.
If it makes you feel better, you can heat the turkey, which would kill most bacteria.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
I still haven't had a cold cut at 17 weeks. I know that it is probably ok, but even the most reputable deli can have listeria lurking around and the idea of warm deli meat makes me nauseous. I just feel like, why take the chance. I can live without it. I know I'm being overly cautious, but it works for me.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
go to some place like Quiznos that throws the sandwich in the oven!! it made me feel better to do that...now at the end of my PG I really don't worry about it too much, but i could understand being a bit more concerned in the beginning!!! But go for it!! Just don't eat it every day!

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
Me personally, I will not eat cold cuts unless they are heated. No one knows what temperature a deli is truly keeping their meats at, or how they were handled in shipping. Listeria is one of the few illnesses than can cross the placenta and severely harm the fetus/baby. Not worth it to me.
Just b/c many eat it and it doesn't cause harm, doesn't mean the next time you eat it, it can't. You can't say I eat it everyday and I am fine. Or I ate it and my baby turned out fine. Maybe all those times it didn't have the bacteria, but all you need is one time for it to have it and you are in a bad place. Not worth it to me to take that risk.
FDA - Listeria

There are a gazillion different opinions on this. My doc said absolutely no cold cuts unless they are steaming hot.

Whether my dr said that or not, that's what I am going on.
I am personally going by the FDA's instructions. I just made my refrigerator colder since I didn't have it cold enough according to FDA.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
then eat one! i have them at least twice a week. if you cut out everything that some doctors say not to eat, you will be left with nothing.
everything in moderation. a turkey sandwich won't harm you or your baby. just make sure you buy it from a reputable deli so it's not old (which is common sense even for non-pregnant women)

Not accurate to say one turkey sandwich won't harm your baby. This is not about moderation. One block of turkey at a deli may have it, another may not. Moderation would not help in that case. Also, a reputable deli means nothing. You have no idea how cold their refrigerator cases are, which is why Listeria grows. And the age of the food/cold cut isn't the issue, it's the temperature it's kept at. So it could be a brand new unopened block of turkey that has Listeria.

See the FDA link I posted above. The FDA is the end all be all IMO and I go by what they recommend for peace of mind.
You eat what you want and others will eat what they want.

Of course, but we all should know the facts before we make our choices, no? And certainly before we tell others something will not harm their baby when the FDA is saying otherwise.
Of course, we all do what we choose in the end. Just trying to help the OP with the actual facts from the FDA, not opinion.

Sure, but as always, the best information should always come from their doctor if they have any questions, not from a post on a website. Sometimes I read things on here that make me absolutely crazy paranoid when it is totally unecessary. Sometimes too much information can be bad I think.

But this isn't just A website, it's the FDA, not some random website. It's unfortunate, none of us want to get crazy about everything we eat. It's hard, I know. We all do what makes us sleep best at night but I am a fan of providing others with the facts so they can make their choices based on true facts, not opinions. That's all.
