Of course, but we all should know the facts before we make our choices, no?
Sure, but as always, the best information should always come from their doctor if they have any questions, not from a post on a website. Sometimes I read things on here that make me absolutely crazy paranoid when it is totally unecessary. Sometimes too much information can be bad I think.
But this isn't just A website, it's the FDA, not some random website. It's unfortunate, none of us want to get crazy about everything we eat. It's hard, I know.
I agree with you on the threat of Listeria, but I disagree with the FDA being the end all and be all on things. The FDA has approved many a drug that are now being recalled bc they really didn't realize what harm they are actually causing people. So to be honest if the FDA says something is safe or not safe, to me that is BS bc they've been wrong in millions of cases before.... I'll go by my doctor and by my own instinct honestly...bc instinct is the best guide I think....

I was talking about this website not the FDA.
Oh gotcha. Sorry I misunderstood.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
IMO, even the FDA website can make you crazy - they are overly cautious becuase of all the "what ifs." yes, cold cuts can carry listeria, but most don't. if you are really worried, you can heat the cold cuts to steaming.
with regards to the OPs question, i go by what my dr. told me. the only things she sais to avoid was sushi, large fish (like swordfish) and non-pasteurized cheeses, and to limit my intake of tuna to once a week.
i have cold cuts a few times a week, and i firmly believe that i can eat what i want in moderation.

I guess, that's a point. But the drs are pretty much getting the facts on these things from the FDA. Drs aren't making up the rules on their own, they are getting the info from elsewhere. Either way, yes, each one should do what they choose, whether it's follow drs orders or follow FDA guidelines.

everything in moderation. a turkey sandwich won't harm you or your baby. just make sure you buy it from a reputable deli so it's not old (which is common sense even for non-pregnant women)
You can't say ONE turkey sandwich WON'T harm your baby. This is not about moderation. One block of turkey at a deli may have it, another may not. Moderation would not help in that case.
Also, a reputable deli means nothing. You have no idea how cold their refrigerator cases are, which is why Listeria grows. And the age of the food/cold cut isn't the issue, it's the temperature it's kept at. So it could be a brand new unopened block of turkey that has Listeria.
See the FDA link I posted above. The FDA is the end all be all IMO and I go by what they recommend for peace of mind.
You eat what you want and others will eat what they want.
Ditto.

I agree and I will also add that the FDA also approved the use of BPA in things we use on a daily basis, including baby bottles for our babies and the baby formula (among other things), that are now being reported to have long lasting negative effects. And despite all of the reports that have come out about BPA, the FDA has kept mum and has chosen not to do anything about it.
(I'm still on the fence over the entire thing myself.)

Also, the whole cold cut thing came about recently. My parents are eastern european and when I told my mom that I couldn't eat cold cuts she was baffled, she's not a huge cold cut eater, but traditionally at restaurants or even family meals the table is set with some array or cold cuts and was never told she couldn't eat them when she was pregnant 28 years ago... I do believe some doctors are going off of the FDA, but I also believe that some, and mine I know for sure does, goes off experience...he's been a doctor for over 20+ plus years and goes off what he has seen in his experience..which is much more valuable to me than the FDA, which not to belabor my point, but to me is a bunch of beurocrats trying to make money....

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
Now my question would be - now did we just scare this girl away from eating a sandwich and maybe others foods OR did she call her doctor to see what they said?

She apparently was scared anyway, that's why she posted. She asked the question, we answered and based on the info provided, she can verify with her dr and then make her choice. I am curious what her dr would say, but then again all drs have varying opinions on this stuff.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
I read on a website once that if I crossed my eyes, they would get stuck. So far so good, but then again, I don't cross my eyes everyday. I also read on another website that if I swallowed watermelon pits, I'd end up with a watermelon growing inside of my belly - well ladies, THAT happened. Some websites tell the truth and others don't.
Come on ladies, let's all do what's best for ourselves and refrain from getting preachy. Doctors are wrong sometimes and so is the FDA. Cumbaya.

Re: I really want a turkey sandwich
Honestly, I think things are just plain crazy these days about what pregnant woman can eat and not eat. I loved my doctor for being very easy-going in this area.
I ate turkey and cheese sandwhiches 5x a week when i was pregnant. My doctor never mentioned not eating deli meats and I went to reputable places.
I say everything in moderation unless your doctor says absolutely not.

Posts like this drive me absolutely insane. Eat what you want in moderation unless your doctor specifically says not to. My doctor told me very few items were off limits such as Tuna more than once per week, Sushi is a definite no no and alcohol.
I have to agree!!!!
Good grief, how did our mothers do it? And their mothers??
Ladies do not drive yourself crazy!! Trust your instincts. Have a sandwich! Relax! Just don't chug beer with it and it'll be fine

I was just going to say this.... Sometimes science, the FDA, and Drs miss majorly problematic things... other times, they create hysteria with things. I think the listeria thing is very hyped-up. Europeans have been having babies just fine while chowing down on tons of cold cuts. (then again, european butcher shops are usually more careful with meat handling than the slaughterhouses/supermarkets in the US.... so their meat is much less likely to be mishandled....)
