Are they kidding me?
I am outraged by it. If you know production you know this was eyeballed & approved.
Their lame apology made it so much worse.
Get the word out.
Our kids deserve better than this.

The publisher apologized and called it an OVERSIGHT.
AN OVERSIGHT
I'm not even kidding this country has lost its goddamned collective mind.
Google it if you want to see it, it's all over FB and Twitter.

If that was "oversight" then you are too stupid to run a newspaper and should be fired.
If it wasn't an oversight than you are an evil, malicious, insensitive a$$ and deserve to be fired.
Either way I would want heads to roll and hope that everyone unsubscribes to that paper and that advertisers with any heart and sense pull out their ads.
Completely disgraceful.

For me, I'm sorry but I tune out all ads. Just like I dont see anything on the right side of facebook. I can't remember a single ad I've seen. HECK I dont even 'see' the ones on the right of THIS website. Its selective viewing. I focus on what I want and ignore the rest.
BUT its not *MY JOB* to check the content before its mass printed....

That would have been handled by either the art department (if they created the ad) or the advertising department. Not by the editorial department.
I work for a group of local newspapers and I can tell you that at least three departments should have seen this before going to press. To a lesser extent editorial, but advertising and production/art should have caught it.
In our case, advertising drives everything. They handle the general layout of each issue (and tell editorial how much space and where in the issue they will put stories). Editorial has zero to do with ads and where they are placed.
Needless to say, if this happened at my job, people would be fired.

I think this was a very poorly made mistake and unfortunately poured salt on an open wound for a lot of people.
However, i do think it was unintentional and not deliberately done as some people are suggesting. Why on earth would the paper want to bring such negative publicity on themselves like that?
The paper apologized - what else do you expect of them in order to accept it?
Yes, it probably was an oversight, and a dumb one at that. But what else should they have said or done to make it a better apology? The mistake has already happened.
It was an unfortunate mishap, that's all IMO
