I personally water the juice down as it is really unnecessary calories and I want her to get used to drinking milk and water Chat Icon

Obviously I don't anymore, but I did because I wanted them to have fluids but not so much sugar.

If you ever get a chance to read juice bottles, check out the grams of sugar per serving.

Re: i see a lot of posts on watering down juice...

I found part of an article:

In very young children, too much juice cuts the appetite for nutritionally superior breast milk or formula. In older children, it often supplements other foods, potentially adding hundreds of excess calories.

Part of the problem is that the calories in juice are so concentrated. Just half a cup (4 ounces) of apple juice has 60 calories, the same as a whole apple, but without the fiber that makes fruit filling.

In 2001, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidelines saying fruit juice should not be given to children younger than 6 months, and that there is no nutritional reason to give it to them before their first birthday.

After that, juice is optional, though the group favors whole produce and urges parents to limit juice to 4 to 6 ounces a day for children up to 6 years old, and to no more than 8 to 12 ounces for older children. Experts say pudgy children should avoid juice altogether.

Logan makes a face if I give him just juice. It's too strong a taste for him plus it's sooooo much sugar.

Plain no sugar added juice still has A LOT of sugar in it. I try to limit sugar intake.

I do not give my DS juice at all and do not plan to for awhile. This is what my Ped's office says about juice:

* Babies do not need juice; it only reduces her appetite for more nutritious foods and increases her risk for excess weight gain
* No juice should be given to babies less than 6 months of age
* If you choose to give your baby juice, it should be from a cup only (not a bottle) and total less than 4 ounces per day

Empty calories that fill little bellies. You want everything they put in their mouths to gice them the nutrition they need - from formula to food, to drinks and snacks. Every calorie counts, and juice is really wasted calories on them.

Oh wait...didn't know we were talking about a baby. I didn't give juice until after a year - and then it was only sparingly to get them used to a sippy cup versus bottle.

See my problem is DD is already bouncing off the walls before her first sip of anything so I can't imagine what would happen if I didn't water it down!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: i see a lot of posts on watering down juice...

I water it down because I follow the guideline of no more than 4 - 6 ounces of juice a day. DS only gets it 2-3 times a week, but I water it down mainly so he has more to drink. If I give him 4 ounces, he guzzles it down and it looking for more. I give him 4 oz. juice and 4 oz. water and he's satisfied. I usually only give him the Gerber or Mott's for Totts so they are watered down anyway so if I wasn't looking to give him more to drink, I don't think it would be necessary unless I was giving him regular full strenth juice.

I really don't give DD juice, but if I do, I water it down to cut the sugar...

My mother always watered my apple juice down, because if she didn't, it had a laxative effect Chat Icon I guess it was too much for my little system...
