No clue how you get it but I had it with my 1st pregnancy and awaiting the results of my 2nd pregnancy - which of course are missing at the lab. No biggie - I feel like everyone has it these days. Just need anti-biotics via IV during labor.

Edited to add - I just got my results today too and yep - I am + too.

Re: I tested positive for strep b

I had it & as soon as your water breaks they want you to come in so they can start you on antibiotics; they also had my baby on antibiotics when she was born but I think that was only b/c my water broke more than 24 hours b4 & they didn't want to take any chances.

I heard about 60% of women carry the virus..

Thanks for the info.

I'm curious whether they are more prone to perform a c section on women with strep b whose water breaks without much progress?
Did they mention the strep b to you when discussing the possibility of a c section?

Nope, it does not increase your likelihood of a c-section, they just keep on giving you antiobiotics until the baby comes out.

Lots and lots of women have this, its really no big deal as long as you know and get the medicine. The only difference is that you have to be in the hospital if your water breaks while a woman without it might be able to stay at home longer.

Re: I tested positive for strep b

I didn't have my test results until after I had her, so they put me on antibiotics to be safe. Just a word of warning, the IV burns your arm like hell!! Ask for some ice packs to numb the pain.

Yep, be prepared for it to burn. Whenever they injected the antibiotics it felt like my whole arm was on fire and then my muscles would hurt.

The nurse warned me that it might burn, so she said to let her know and she'd adjust it so it didn't burn. When the burning started, I told her, and she did something to help with that....you don't have to be in pain!

My water broke 24 hours before I delivered & after not progressing at that point they opted for a C-section, but it didn't have anything to do w/ the strep B. As the girls mentioned, they just continue to give you antibiotics.

Also, I had a LOT of antibiotics & my arm never burned.

I was positive and didn't notice the antibiotics at all. I wouldn't worry about it.Chat Icon
