I think DH is ready to get a "family" car--updated to ask if DH needs the "bigger
So now that DD is one year old, DH is finally thinking of trading in his 2-door BMW and getting something more family-friendly.
Based on the good experiences other family members have had, he is debating between a Honda or a Toyota.
That said, any thoughts on the CR-V, Rav4, Pilot, 4 Runner, Highlander?
Thanks!

Re: I think DH is ready to get a "family" car--need opinions on SUV's
I am partial to Toyotas, since DH worked for them for so long. The Highlander is a nice size. Might be a bit big if you are transitioning from a sedan. The Rav4 is great, and the new ones have a 3rd row option. They are great on gas too. The 4 Runner is also really nice and might be a better deal than the Highlander. But there is no 3rd row option for the 4 Runner.
Having said that, a good friend of mine went from a small sedan to a Honda Pilot with a 3rd row & loves it. She has 2 kids, both still in convertible seats and there is plenty of room. ETA: I forgot the CR-V. It was nice but I felt a little claustrophobic in it.

I've had the CR-V for 2 months and absolutely adore it. It was a great transition SUV also - I previously have driven only small cars. It drives like a car but has all the good points, esp with the baby, of an SUV. IMO, best possible value out there.

Thanks for the input. DH is 6'3. Do you think he needs the bigger category?

He should be fine in those you listed. The Rav-4 is a little smaller. I like Toyota's (just don't let DH hear that )

We have two CRV's and love them - we looked the Rav4 - but we had a friend with us and DH and our friend sat in the back seat and honestly there was little room in back left over. DH is 6' and our friend is about 5'11. I can easily fit three adults in my back seat without being crushed.

oooh, that is good to know. Right now we use my car when we go out as a family because DH doesn't even have a car seat (he complained about it being tough to get DD in and out of a 2-door). I have a VW Jetta which I love but the backseat has NO leg room, especially if DH is driving.

I've always owned Honda's and never had a problem. I had the Jeep Liberty and hated it. The CRV or RAV4 is a little cramped with a car seat rear facing (the seat needs to be pulled all the way up), the main reason we opted for the Pilot with DC#2 on the way!!!
Happy Car Shopping :)

I LOVE my Pilot. I had a Mazda Protege before it and I had no problem with the transition. It is so roomy, I just love it!

My sis has the Rav4 and she likes it. i think it's terrible, but that's because I drive a 6 cylander (sp?) and would never drive anything less.
