I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
He's a gassy baby. We started on Similac Advanced, then tried Sensitive with no luck. We moved to Isomil (soy) and while that went down smoothly, it constipated him. Now that his digestive system is a little more mature, we're trying the sensitive again.
We burp him after every single ounce and several times at the end of a feeding, and I keep him upright for 15-20 minutes or so - I even put a wedge under him when I do the after-feeding diaper change. He never spits up or screams/cries. He sleeps on an incline too.
He's not cranky at all ... just gassy. He gets hiccups soooo often (every single feeding) and just about every time he goes to sleep, he wakes up after 20-30 minutes and needs to burp. Then gets hiccups. It doesn't matter if he's swaddled or not swaddled. I'm afraid that constricting him in the swaddle doesn't allow him to move his own gas (by kicking his legs around), but if I don't swaddle him, he wakes himself up every hour with his twitching/flailing/punching himself in the face.
We've given him the Mylicon drops when he's having a really gassy time, but not on a regular basis. They seem to help.
Any BTDT have any suggestions? I hate seeing him so uncomfortable!
Thanks

Re: I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
DS was on Mylicon with EVERY feeding for the first 3 months. He was a horrible gassy boy. that was the only thing that helped. I also found (me personally) that stopping while feeding to burp was worse for him. I would wait until he finished the bottle and then burped him. It seemed to help.

I would try gripe water and FM anthonyswife. You described her DD to a T the first few weeks. She does have AR but I know they switched her formula and it helped I just don't remember which one. I think it was Nutramigen.

Re: I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
abbys the same way... shes only waking up due to gas... not burps but tons of tooting and it wakes her up. We use mylicon but the ped only recommend it to use every 6 horus which just wasnt enough for her since shes so gassy. (shes on soy which doesnt help) So they recommend Gripe Water. she gets a teaspoon in her bottle or from a dropper and she can have it 6 times a day. i actually think it works 100 times better. we actually stopped using the mylicon and shes been doing great!
give the gripe water a try!

Re: I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
I had this problem with my DS who is now 5 weeks old. I have to say the gas pain relief drops worked wonders. At first I got really worried and felt bad for him and I was thinking of changing the formula this around 3 weeks of age and my pediatrician recommended I stick with Similac Advance longer and just use the drops as directed. He told me that this is so common and his body is just getting used to all the formula intake and all formulas will give gas. I did stick with it and added the drops for 1 weeks straight and it was a life saver. I stopped the drops for a week and he absolutely fine no pains at all and easily passes gas.
I say continue with the drops as directed. I used it with every feeding then every other feeding then stopped it completely and it worked for me. They say you have to use the drops consistently for it to really work.

Re: I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
This was our DD...
we switched from Similac Advance to Sensitive.
But here is what I suggest to you....we started with teh powder and while it was better, I noticed that DD did not get any gas at all with the RTF, whereas powder she has a hard time tolerating.
Recently at 9mhts old, tried the powder again and sure enough, gassy fussy baby was back.,
So I suggest Sensitive RTF only, and always upright ONE HOUR after each feeding. We still keep DD upright for one hour, each feeding, at 9 mths old.
Trust me, I think the RTF is the key for some fussy babies. Less air, smoother, thiicker, etc,
If you search my old posts, you will see my complaints about this when DD was 2 mths old ish.
Also...we tried Mylicon and Mylanta with no luck, it was the formula (powdered esp) that was causing the issue all along. Never did gripe water, really, I believe the key is finding the right formula. PLEASE try the RTF!!!
HTH, FM if you want!

Re: I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
for about 2 months we were doing mylicon with EVERY single feeding - along with the soy - keeping her upright and burping her within an inch of her life...
there's nothing wrong with doing that with the mylicon. the soy doesn't constipte Em...that i will say...
i'm so sorry sweety!!!!!!!!!

I TOTALLY AGREE with you on the powder vs. RTF... my dd does soooo much better on the RTF and i think its because most of us who use powder have a formula mixer wich adds so much air to the bottles causing more gas this is what i noticed! the RTF is about 10 $ more a week but its worth it

Re: I think DS' gas is preventing him from deep sleep at night. Help!
Tried the gripe water last night and my baby is BACK!
got up at 12am gobbled his usual 7oz bedtime feeding, pooped, went right back to sleep by 12:45. Was up again at 5:30, ate, and went right back to sleep! Up again at 9:45 for the day. I fed him, and now he's chilling in his bouncy seat, dozing off.
We use the powder, but i stir with a spoon, not shake. No bubbles form at the top, so he's tolerating that OK too.
Soooo I guess I'll put gripe water in his bottles throughout the day today and see if we notice a difference :)
Thanks!
