Thank God for the budget!!!
But don't you still have to make up that $1005 by the end of the year?? I am so confused by all this LIPA stuff. We were on budget billing last year and when the end of the year came we had to pay the difference of all that we used over the budget. Did I get screwed?

yes...but only the summer months is our bill that high....during the cooler months my bill is less than my budget amout and usually we end up paying a little less our last payment of the budget year.

We are fighting with them too right now, our bill that came last week was 600 bucks!!!!!! Insane for a two bedroom apt, where we both work all day and the air IS NOT ON!!!

Our bill is usually 90ish dollars - last month's bill was *only* 260 dollars and we have central AC in the house.
Unless you have very old appliances I'd think it's wrong. I'd have them reread it; and if that doesnt work and they still think it's high I know they sell a device that you plug in that tells you how much power things draw - try to do an estimation of what it should be and figure it out. Or, you could probably find the manuals for your appliances online and they probably give you the kw/hr for the device.
Also, remember that sometimes they do an estimated reading - so your bill might be extra high this month because they are estimating too high...

That is crazy! Our bill is usually $75 and this month it was $200 and I thought that was a lot, but we have Con Ed. Maybe they read the wrong meter, or someone is hooked up to your power, my brother swears this is happening to him in Manhattan.

no that big but we do have 2 families living here...we have central air upstairs...that is set for 74 all the time and my parents have individual units downstairs that are used often....

I would 100% fight that bill - if you are in a complex sometimes they someone hooks onto your line or they screw something up and added something to your meter rather than the correct one. You can have someone come check the meter and then come in and evaluate your apt and see that there is no way you could have an $800 bill.

This is exactly what we're going to do because even if I set my AC to the lowest degree setting there is on the thermostat and left the window open, there's no way possible I could have used that much electricity.

that is TOTALLY insane. i have a 4 brdm colonial, w/ cac, ig pool and sprinklers. my last bill was less than $300 and i am not on a flex plan. i was in FL for over 2 weeks and the cac, sprinklers and filter was running the WHOLE time. you NEED to call them and have them readjust the bill.

I would tell your building you need to see your meter... you have a right to see it if you are paying the electrcitiy for the apartment
document your calls or write a letter - i think you want out of the apartment
bring the meter number to LIPA if possible - talk to LIPA
if LIPA says it is wrong - tell the maintenance/leasing that the ac unit is not running efficently and causing you to spend $800 in a month - it is obscen for a 1 bedroom apartment
you can also threaten to post on www.apartmentratings.com - the bill you had
I had an $800 bill for one month of heat in a 2 bed room high rise apartment and was only there 3 weeks of the month - i got $500 back from my leasing company because I complained the heater was enficient and windows were not sealed properly

Yeah. There is definitely something wrong. I had the same problem with Keyspan. My monthly bill is like $14 (just for our stove) and one month they billed us over $300. They came and reread the meter and fixed it.

A few years ago we were in an apt (in a private house) and had problems with the phone service...would lose the signal each time it rained. So I'd call (eventually when it dried up  ) to complain. They'd send a service tech out and of course there'd be nothing wrong...duh of course b/c its not raining. I finally got someone out there while it was raining and he noticed that one of the lines (way up on the telephone pole) had been repaired but never sealed back up...looked like it had a black garbage bag taped around it. He was pretty nice but of course wasn't authorized to fix it. He said to call it back in.
So I called to report it...and called again...and called again. Still no response.
So I reported it to the public utillities commission, and they responded right away and fixed the problem. I even got the phone company tech supervisor's personal cell phone number if I ever needed anything again! 
One thing I'll suggest, have a record of when you called, who you talked to, etc.

That happened to me once when I lived in an apartment building and it turned out that they had billed me for the whole building, not just my apartment.
Can you ask any of your neighbors what their bills were like?
