I want a freezer stash! how often do I need to pump?
I just got a Medela Pump In Style, and want to start building a freezer stash. If I want to boost supply, do I have to pump after every feeding? Or can I get away with pumping two or three times a day? DD is four months and still nurses every two hours; am I "stealing" milk from her by doing this?

Re: how often should I pump to boost BM supply?
Are you going back to work? why are you building the supply? Or do you mean you want to build up your milk supply in your breasts? lol
Well you have a few options? You can pump after each feeding but I found that so daunting. If you do that be prepared to build up your milk supply in your breasts.
If you are just looking to build up your freezer supply you can do a few things.
1: feed off 1 breast in the morning and pump off the other. You have a good build up then.
2: I pump 1 time a day at night. About 2-3 hours after he goes to bed I pump. i get one whole bottle a day that way.
I hated pumping..still do, but once a day as been the best for me...but at least it gives me a stash!

Not going back to work for awhile. I wanted a freezer stash so that I can get out a little w/o worrying about a two-hour time limit. When DD starts cereals, I know those typically get mixed with milk, and I don't want to be chained to my pump for that either.

Re: I want a freezer stash! how often do I need to pump?
Does she sleep a long stretch at night yet? When I was on maternity leave I pretty much only pumped at night. DD was sleeping very long stretches early on and STTN by about 2 months old so I would BF her before she went down for the night and a few hours later I would pump (before I went to bed) and get 6/7 oz to store in the freezer. Sometimes I would get up at 2 or 3am and pump again once I knew she would sleep til about 5am or later.
Also if she only eats from one breast and is full or falls asleep, pump the other one.

Re: I want a freezer stash! how often do I need to pump?
I'm waiting for a 20% off coupon to buy an electric pump so I bought a cheaper hand pump to get me through until then...I pump in the morning after i feed DD and get one full bottle 5-6 oz, in the late afternoon and get the same and then at night and get around 3 oz for DH to bottle feed to DD. I've been freezing about 10-12 oz a day. I don't notice DD getting any less. She's a snacked all day long...sometimes right after i feed her then pump she wants to eat again and theres always enough.

Re: I want a freezer stash! how often do I need to pump?
whenever they skipped a feeding (go longer than 2 hrs) I would pump. THe baby is more eficient at the breast..so you will never empty it completely...so do not worry about taking it away from your baby! your breasts will make more...even if baby is hungry shortly after a pump!
I always feed the first morning feed off one breast...then pump the other
and I always pumped 2-3 hrs after my DCs went to bed...so if I fed at 9 and that was where they were down for a long stretch, I would pump ~11pm right before I went to bed!
Hope that helps! good luck!
