omg, i cannot even read this crap.
a woman has to wait 24 hours for the medical examiner to come take her deceased father
a woman sits and waits while her mother is dying - no one ever comes. her mother dies
this poor 22 year old woman, in labor for 9 hours and no one comes. the baby dies at the scene

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
this is awful awful awful. but this is not the mayors fault. this is NYers fault. for NOT getting out on the road.
so many traffic jams were caused by people will ill equipped cars getting stuck. a fed ex truch was stuck in front of my building for 4 hours yesterday. why? what package was so important, Fed Ex? and if you NEEDED to get out there, why were you REAR WHEEL DRIVE trucks doing the delivery????
again, it is an awful terrible tragedy. and that poor girl.
but the blame cannot be placed squarely on the city's shoulders. it's our fault, as a collective.
my heart and prayers go out to all those who fell victim to the circumstances surrounding the blizzard.

normally i dont put blame on one person, but this happened in Brooklyn and as you know as a brooklynite it wasnt plowed. my friends in bay ridge have NO cars on their streets and ZERO plows came by for 3 days. 4th ave is still not plowed. the mayor made sure his buddies in the city were plowed but didnt care about the "outer boroughs".
and i love how he tells nyers to stay home, yet makes his city employees go to work!! yeah im disgruntled.

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
Sorry. It is the city's fault. DH and I HAVE to go to work... we are part of "emergency care." Think of all the people who fit that collective. We are usually driving in to work at 5AM to get to work. We don't get a helicopter pickup.
How does the mayor think we are going to get out of our house & get to work? My old neighborhood in Queens (where DS will be baby sat) is Still not plowed (day 4 now). There is NO car stuck and blocking the street.
I would sue the city... it unfortunately takes a death to change things.
BTW: I live in the sburbs now... paying $$$ taxes, but my tertiary block was plowed every hour on Sunday night and was clean at 5AM when we started cleaning the driveway to get DH to work. I'm still on leave.

Terrible. I think the city was swamped and just couldn't keep up. They just didn't have the man power. Dh is a cop and they did not even plow infront of his building. Their undercover cars are buried under mounds of snow.

Not to start the debate again but I disagree. Many blocks that were NOT blocked by abandoned cars were not plowed and still are not plowed. Just not enough manpower, hence it's the city's fault.

I know what you mean. My old block in Queens still NOT plowed. My parents are trapped still and will be for a long time. My new home in Suffolk was plowed over 5 times starting on the day of the storm, and I live on a very quiet desolate block. The city really did drop the ball and that's why I would never live in the city again. I would move OOS before moving back to the city.
What a travesty that people died due to the snow.
Everything she said. My parents live in Queens, they're trapped too. Meanwhile my minor block in Nassau was plowed and drivable from day 1. Bloomberg should try and remember there are FIVE boroughs in NYC.

omg
Honestly this is why I'm always fighting with my Dad to move out of Iowa. He's getting old and the distance to a hopsital if he needs it is impossible in snow storms.
I live 15mins from a hopsital. I always do. I have the biggest fear of not getting help when I need it most.
But that last lady with a dr appt. What dr is actually that urgent? I'm sure there are some but still

you are perfectly allowed to disagree. my experience has not been much different. like I've already stated, my street has not been plowed. and the sidewalks have not been cleared either, so I have to walk in the street (and my husband just told me that the bus that runs up and down my block just skidded out and crashed into a parked car a few feet from our apt)
it is not ideal. but again, the city is BROKE. with all the taxes we pay, all the revenue we make, we have NO money. while tragic events have taken place, I can understand why Bloomberg set out the way he did. you work the heart first and get to the limbs second. it sounds cold but it is totally logical.
the story of the baby breaks my heart, especially as a mother and a resident of Brooklyn. but again, thinking more and more about it, I don't understand why no one got there in time. it cannot be blamed on the fact that streets were not plowed. there has to be more going on. even if ems couldn't get within 5 blocks of the building with an ambulance, they could have reached her on foot and even walked to a hospital in much quicker time that 10 hours.
it has to be a combination of events that caused this tragedy. it's the only thing that makes sense.

My heart goes out to that poor baby and her mother. That is just tragic.
I don't think you can blame the city. There just isn't enough manpower to clear so much snow. It's really unfortunate that the city picks and chooses which streets to plow. You can only blame mother nature.
DH walked to the hospital in the snow to go to work on Monday. Other hospital staff also walked to work in the snow even though the trains and streets were a wreck.

As other posters have said some streets have been plowed 4-5 times, and some streets have yet to be plowed (like mine)... why is that?? Thats not a lack of man power, thats a lack of any sense.
If you plowed one street/neighborhood, MOVE ON!!

But what doesn't add up is, this is NOT the worst storm we've had in decades or anything. I just googled-- in late February of 2010 Central Park got 21" of snow during a single storm (I remember that one because I was sick and made DH go out and get me cough syrup, lol). So that was certainly comparable to the 20 or so inches that Central Park received this week, right? I don't remember unplowed streets being as much of a problem during/after that storm. Clearly there was a difference in resources being deployed.

Honestly, the whole story baffles me somewhat. Why was she in the lobby? Was the building closed? Was it a business or residential? How far along was she as the article implies that she may not have been having regular doctor visits?
I don't think the death can be laid at the feet of the government. I don't think Mayor Bloomberg did a great job but I don't know why yet so it's hard to form an opinion quite yet.

Just to answer your questions...
They said that she was trying to walk to the hospital b/c she was in labor, but she had to duck into the nearest building b/c she just couldn't make it.

Honestly it was awful timing...it came when a lot of ppl including city workers were off..they didn't have the man power...do I think the Mayors attitude is a bit lacksadazical (sp) yes, but it's not just his fault. I also agree with Opheila, I was out yesterday on LI and these ppl with these small tiny cars are attempting to get through huge mounds of snow..I mean some common sense by citizens would have worked too

This is so sad. I was just thinking that I would have tried to get to the hospital with my friends and family no matter what. Poor poor girl.
I would blame neighbors and others more than the city. I don't know how far she was from the hospital but if enough people tried to get here there or look for some doctor in the vicinity, I think the death could possibly have been avoided.

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
An 8:30 a.m. 911 call was made, with the caller saying the birth wasn't imminent, a Fire Department source told the Daily News. The call received a low priority, and the city unsuccessfully tried twice to contact the caller during the next few hours, the source said. A second, more urgent 911 call at 4:30 p.m. reported the woman was bleeding and the baby was crowning - and the call was upgraded to level two, the source said.
An hour later, the NYPD contacted the FDNY/EMS to report the baby had been delivered but was unconscious. Cops cut the umbilical cord and tried to revive the newborn, police source said.
The call was then upgraded to level one - highest priority - and an FDNY crew arrived in 12 minutes, sources said. EMTs were on the scene at 6 p.m.
this makes much more sense. a series of events *could* have caused the babies death, but we don't know how far along the baby was..it if was even at viability.
I want to know why no one in this girls family helped her move from the vestibule for all those hours. if you read the article, it states that a heart attack victim was dragged sled style to the hospital after the ambulance got stuck in a snow bank and LIVED. I am so sick and sad that this girl was not afforded the same help and ingenuity.
if she was already walking to the hospital, she couldn't have been that far (either to interfaith or Kings county). I don't think the reporting on this is fair. just adding fuel to the fire.

Re: I was disgusted with the way the mayor handled the blizzard, but this........
The city was plowed like sh*t - I work a few blocks from the Armory - THAT street isn't plowed ......... ??? !!
DH works up @ Columbia and Cornell - not plowed well -I guess they could say they plowed - but how the hell an ambulance can get in/out or just a normal person in an emergecy rushed situation is beyond me -
Way to prioritize !!
We have been driving in to the city all week b/c I can't fathom having to walk from Penn to the office in the MESS that they call 'clean up' (Normally I'd suck it up and deal, but @ 20 weeks PG I'm not climbing the mounds of snow through the streets of Mahnattan)
That being said, I agree w/ Ophelia - it's not simply the Mayor's fault - I can't imagine it was easy getting staff in to work over the holiday weekend when people probably ALREADY had vacation time scheduled - There were the usual morons all over the road, double parked - Yeah, that makes plowing easy for everyone - way to be considerate !! While I agree they did a sh*t job, I don't think you can blame ONE person for it
